Easy to make Chocolate Avocado Brownies recipe that is incredibly fudgy and packed with healthy fats. They’re gluten free, grain free and delicious!
I stock up sometimes in the supermarket with avocados because my mind is racing with so many ideas. Usually though I come home with multiple avocados and only use them for tortilla soup. But this time, I was craving something sweet – Avocado Brownies to the rescue!
Recipe Video
I made this recipe video to show you all the steps for easy baking!
Why These Brownies are the Best
Surprisingly, avocados work really well in baked goods. Avocados can replace butter, shortening, and sometimes even eggs. They make desserts super moist and delightfully rich, while adding nutrients and healthy fats.
Why else are these brownies amazing? They’re made with applesauce instead of butter or oil! They are gluten free and grain free (no flour!)! They are the perfect brownies to make if you have that overripe avocado that you don’t know what to do with! These brownies are WIN WIN WIN!
Can you taste the avocado in the brownies?
The avocado is mild and when paired with cocoa and chocolate chips, you’ll never even taste it. The avocado is a substitute for the butter and oil and makes the brownies fudgy and moist.
My husband who doesn’t like avocados at all gobbles these brownies up happily. He still doesn’t know they’re made with avocados. I know, I’m sneaky. 🙂
Ingredients You Need
You probably don’t even need to go to the grocery store to buy any of these ingredients, I bet you might have everything in your kitchen already!
- 1 avocado
- apple sauce
- creamy peanut butter
- egg
- white sugar
- brown sugar
- vanilla
- cocoa powder
- chocolate chips
How Do You Make Avocado Brownies?
Start this recipe by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F and spray an 8×8-inch pan with cooking spray.
Now, mash the avocado up with a fork or potato masher. Try to get it super creamy, with no lumps. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed avocado with the applesauce, peanut butter, egg, sugars, and vanilla. Stir until you a smooth brownie mix.
Next add in the cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Stir all of the ingredients together.
Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
Cook the brownies for 33-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Tips For Making These Brownies
- The chocolate chips are a key to this recipe because you put them into the mixture whole – not melted. As the brownies bake, the chocolate chips will melt which makes the brownies intensely decadent.
- If you want to make them dairy free, that’s easy too! Just substitute the chocolate chips with vegan chocolate chips .
- When they come out of the oven, as hard as it may be, let them cool. This is very important because they are so fudgy, if they don’t cool completely they will fall apart. They are definitely worth the wait!
So eat one, go for it. You deserve it. Eat it with a fork. Eat it with a spoon. Eat it plain. Throw ice cream on top. Throw whip cream on top. Throw sprinkles on top. Just throw it in your mouth already.
Enjoy!

jackie @ Marin mama cooks says
Oh girl, you are super sneaky and I love it. It’s totally something I would do! I hope he’s not too mad now that he knows the truth! These look uber fudgey, just the way I like them! I love making up my own words as well. I do it all the time and I think we all know what ooey means, so I’m glad you went with it. My kitchen is always a mess when I’m cooking especially when I’m making a recipe for the blog because I’m rushing around trying to take photos and I’m not cleaning up in between steps like I normally do. I love cooking and photographing, but I hate the clean up! Ugh! xoxo, Jackie
Pamela says
He wasn’t upset.. in fact I think he’s a little sad that the brownies are all gone! I need to make another batch very (very!) soon!
Kristi @ lifesprinkles says
These look amazing! Will be my next brownie endeavor for sure! 🙂
Pamela says
Enjoy! Let me know how you like them. 🙂
Kristin @ Dizzy Busy and Hungry! says
What a creative use for avocados! I often have the same problem where I buy avocados and then they all ripen at the same time and I have to scramble to find ways to use them. I love them and I hate to throw them out. This is an amazing option and I can’t wait to try it!
Pamela says
Thanks Kristin! That’s totally my predicament too, now I have an excuse to make brownies more often. 🙂
Lindsay @ Life, Love and Sugar says
I love how you hid the avocado from your husband! Totally something I’d do – especially so I don’t have to eat it all by myself (also realistic). The brownies look great!!
Pamela says
Hahaha, thanks Lindsay! I could easily finish a batch of these myself….
Dorothy @ Crazy for Crust says
These are fabulous! LOVE!
Pamela says
Thanks Dorothy!
Kelly says
These brownies look wonderful Pamela! I love the sound of hiding avocado in here! Hehe I try to sneak in healthy ingredients whenever I can for my hubby and 2 year old too 🙂 Your brownies look so moist and I love the addition of peanut butter in here too 🙂
Pamela says
Thanks Kelly! Sometimes it’s ok to be sneaky. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
Faith @ Pixie Dust Kitchen says
Chocolate is always good for hiding avocado for the people who don’t like it! I personally love substituting it for butter in desserts because it’s an easy way to make desserts healthier!
Pamela says
Definitely going to continue to add (hide) avocado in the future!
Sam says
I love guacamole and avocado on my salads/ sandwiches. I’ve never thought to put one in brownies, but that may have to happen soon. Our avocado trees were just trimmed, and they’re going to be much more scarce in my home now. 🙁
Pamela says
So jealous that you have a avocado tree.. it’s on my dream list! <3
Sam says
I can’t help you get a tree, but you can share from mine if you visit LA! I’d love for you to speak to my high school students about what you do… we have gardens all over school and I’ve been showing them cool stuff that’s going on in cities!
Pamela says
Deal, Deal, Deal!
Nicole@HeatOvenTo350 says
I hide foods on my husband, too. Husbands would die if it weren’t for wives tricking them into eating things that are good for them. 😉
These brownies look amazing.
Pamela says
I like your thinking on that! 🙂
Jamie G says
I’m always losing my lens cap too! Usually it is in my back pocket or my bra (say what?!) and I always look there last.
I’ve seen the avocado brownies popping up lately. Unfortunately avocado makes me incredibly ill. I’ve made black bean brownies before and my husband was none the wiser 😉
Pamela says
Back pocket is a good spot.. bra, well I can’t say that happened yet, but there’s a first for everything! 🙂
Joy @Baking-Joy says
Avocado brownies are totally awesome 🙂 these look fabulous, so fudgy and delicious! Thank you for the link 🙂
Pamela says

Awesome of you to try something new like this. They look incredibly moist and fudgy! The PB is a very nice touch too.
Pamela says
Thanks Monica!
Nora @ Buttercream Fanatic says
Ok, I’m not admitting to anything here, but let’s just say that sometimes you gotta just. ahem, amend the truth a little to get some people to try some things that you know they will like.
I’m so curious to try these now!
Pamela says
High 5, agreed Nora! I like to think of it as positive helping!
Anne ~ Uni Homemaker says
I love the idea of adding avocado in here to give it that creamy texture. This looks so good! I think it’s ok to fib a little if it’ll get Matthew to eat things he doesn’t like. 😉 I don’t do it with a grown up (although I should) but I do it all the time with my 10 year old nephew to get him to eat certain food he doesn’t like. Enjoy your weekend Pamela! 🙂
Pamela says
Hahaha.. I love that we can agree that fibbing is ok when it comes to yummy food. :D) Have a great one Anne!
Hannah says
Yum – these look so delicious! I tried to make some avocado black bean brownies a few years ago and they were epic fails – I need to try out this recipe, pronto!
Pamela says
That’s funny.. and brings up another lie. I made my father black bean brownies last year but didn’t tell him because he would have never eaten them. Afterwards he was praising how good they were. 😛
Ashley @ Wishes and Dishes says
I love how you hid the avocados while you made these hahaha. They look wonderful!!! I love avocado…in anything!
Pamela says
Thanks Ashley! Sometimes you have to hide…..
Kalyan says

Katie says
Good lord these look great. Ooey is a word and it describes the looks of these perfectly.
Your husband? Nuts. Just pure and simple.
Pamela says
I know, 100% nuts.
Suzanne says
Love these brownies. I am so making them asap!! Brilliant.
Pamela says
I ate so many in the last 24 hours…. they are wild…
Amy @ Elephant Eats says
I always hide foods my husband *thinks* he hates and then give it to him knowing he’ll like it. You’re totally justified in doing this.
Also, I used to ALWAYS lose my lens cap so i bought this and it’s amazing: http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/lens-cap-strap-holder/
Just be careful to buy the right size. I thought i did but i was wrong 🙁
Pamela says
Great idea, I kind of feel like a detective but instead of my badge I have a lens cap. Now the question… do you ever tell your husband? You have to want to!
Amy @ Elephant Eats says
I totally tell him…that’s the best part 😉
Pamela says
Love it!
