Homemade Chinese Pork Wonton Soup recipe, just like your favorite Chinese restaurant makes!
Earlier this week Matthew and I celebrated 11 years together. I met Matthew during my first few weeks at Art School in Pittsburgh in 2002. Months later, we were dating. Months after that, we moved in (with Essy!). 11 years later, we’ve changed locations, added a few furry children to the family and are still doing out art together. What else do we do together? We cook in the kitchen.
I would say that I cook the majority of the meals that we eat for dinner, but once in a while Matthew cooks up dinner and it’s always delicious. One recipe he’s really into and made it his goal to perfect was homemade wonton soup. Wonton soup is a favorite of ours and is one of the most popular things we order from Chinese takeout, but we wanted to make it ourselves, including making the wontons from scratch. Matthew was on a wonton kick for a few weeks, where he spent many nights in the kitchen rolling dough and trying different filler contents to add to the wontons. I have to say this recipe is the real deal and it receives a 10/10 on the “I Love You!” scale.
The wontons are a pretty simple recipe consisting of basics: flour, egg, salt and water. Once the dough is made, you’ll want to give it about an hour to rest to make it easier to roll out.
You want the dough to be pretty flexible, so if you pull it apart it should stretch pretty easily.
Then you will start to roll the dough out (as thin as possible) and cut it up into wonton wrappers. Using cornstarch on your surface will make sure the dough doesn’t stick to the counter top.
After that, you’ll start to fill it with your pork. If you’re anything like me you will ask for this to be poured into your mouth right now as well.
Then you’ll fold and close each wonton. I asked Matthew for some tips and he told me “don’t freak out when the dough starts to rupture when folding, just be patient”.

We always like to add vegetables whenever possible so we throw in some frozen peas and fresh scallions. It’s just perfectly delicious!
- 2 cups flour
- 1 egg
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 16 wonton wrappers (see recipe above)
- 1 pound ground pork
- 6 crushed garlic cloves
- 6 teaspoons crushed ginger
- 5 tablespoons soy sauce
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups frozen peas
- 1/2 cup chopped up scallions
- Pour sifted flour into a large bowl.
- In separate bowl mix together egg, salt and water. Add this to the flour mixture.
- Knead the dough until it's smooth. If the dough is not forming into a ball, add a little more water but do not make it sticky.
- Let dough rest for 60 minutes.
- Divide dough in half. One half a time, roll out on a cornstarch covered surface,rolling the dough as thin as you can get it.
- Cut into approximately 3-4 inch squares.
- Brown ground pork in pan.
- Mix garlic, ginger and soy sauce in bowl. Add this to the ground pork mixture and stir until evenly combined.
- Lay out your wonton wrappers and add a spoonful of the ground pork mixture to each wonton. Close each wonton by bringing one corner to the other, then crimping the dough together with hand or fork.
- Bring your chicken broth to a boil on the stove in a large pot.
- Add in your frozen peas and pork wontons. Simmer 5 minutes or until peas are cooked.
- Serve in bowls and garnish with chopped scallions.
