Easy Fried Cabbage and Sausage Recipe
I’m back with another sausage and cabbage recipe! I can’t help it—these two ingredients are just meant to be together. Smoky, savory sausage and tender, buttery cabbage? Absolute perfection. So, of course, I’m always finding new ways to serve them!
We have plenty of go-to cabbage recipes, but sometimes I need something fast—like throw-it-together-in-30-minutes fast. (You know those nights.) That’s how this Fried Cabbage and Sausage skillet meal was born, and let me tell you, it’s become an instant favorite.
But if you’ve got a little more time and want something cozy, you have to try my Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage recipe. Let it simmer low and slow all day, and you’ll be rewarded with the most flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth cabbage ever. Or, if you’re in the mood for a true comfort classic, my Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Cabbage Recipe is the kind of meal that makes your whole house smell amazing.
And if you’re craving something hearty and soul-warming, don’t sleep on my Polish Sausage and Cabbage Soup—it’s rich, satisfying, and exactly what you need on a chilly night.
No matter which one you choose, you really can’t go wrong with cabbage and sausage. But why choose just one? Try them all!
How to Make Fried Cabbage With Sausage
Prep. Chop up an onion. Chop up a head of cabbage. Cut up sausage into 1 inch pieces.
Fry. Add olive oil to a large frying pan and cook onion and sausage until browned.
Add the cabbage and butter. I know this will look like a lot of cabbage (that’s why you need a large pan) but trust me, it wilts down. Reduce heat to medium, cover and cook until soft, stirring every couple of minutes so it doesn’t stick to the pan.
Season. Add salt and pepper to taste, just a little dash will do.
Serve. We love serving them over mashed potatoes, is there anything better?
What to serve it with?
You can eat this “as is”, but I highly recommend you serve fried cabbage and sausage over these 2 options:
- mashed potatoes – my absolute favorite. Load up a plate of fluffy mashed potatoes made with russet potatoes and serve this dish on top of them. Perfection!
- egg noodles – my husband’s preferred way. Cook some egg noodles or be a real over achiever and make homemade egg noodles, put them on a plate and serve this on top. Delicious!
I hope you enjoy this recipe for dinner soon! 🙂

Made this recipe for dinner tonight. It was delicious. I like how quick and easy it came together and was ready on the pocketbook! Next time I’m going to add some bacon to it. I think that sounds good.

I love this. Thank you for the inspiration. I did change it a lot but the basis of this recipe is what I’d really been craving when I started out.
I’m 59 years old and haven’t cooked for about 20 years. My husband passed away in March and he did all the cooking for the 20 years before that I’m 59 so when he passed away unexpectedly, it was quite an adjustment and I’ve had to learn to cook all over again. I was never great at it and I never enjoyed it, but I used to look for recipes for him to make us and by doing that I found out where some of my downfalls were. I never added anywhere near enough seasoning to anything.
Now, sometimes I go overboard, but that’s because I like a lot of flavor.. when I said out to make this, I had intended to follow the recipe exactly I don’t even know what prompted me to change it but when I put the onions and kielbasa, and I gave it some salt and pepper, and I added a little bit of red pepper flakes by some Italian seasoning, a light sprinkling of garlic powder and a spoonful of chicken flavor, better than bullion. After I added the cabbage and the butter, I also added more salt and pepper, but I and some hot sauce. I used Texas and I didn’t measure so I don’t know how much.. All I can say is it wasn’t a little bit, but I’ll say it wasn’t an excessive amount..
As I was cooking, I wondered if I had completely ruined it but then the smells started coming through and it smells so delicious in my kitchen. I was almost afraid to try it at the end, but I did and it was absolutely delicious. My daughter had some and she said she loved it too. She just wished I’d added more garlic. I had considered adding more garlic, but I have a little Chihuahua and a dog that I called a Muttley because he’s a mixed breed he’s about the size of A cocker spaniel beagle. They are my constant companions and honestly they’re just my babies. I can’t resist giving them bits of whatever I’m having and I was worried if I put too much garlic in it that it could cause problems. I really only give them bits of the meat and they’ve had stuff with garlic on it before and I know they’ve always been just fine but I also know it’s something that’s not supposed to be good for them. I almost forgot I added about a teaspoon of sugar at the end, and I tasted it before I added the sugar and it was really good. It was also really good with the I liked better ever. Try my way maybe take a little bit out of the pot and sprinkle some sugar on it before putting it in the whole thing. If I made this again, I would probably half the sugar leave it out altogether and I would add some Parmesan cheese , my daughter said she thought I should add more garlic. I thought there was enough seasonings with all the other stuff I put in anyway.
I made it into something completely different, but I am thankful for the inspiration that you provide here.

I make this recipe by adding curry powder to the cabbage first, boil the cabbage in curry powder and water then drain once cooked al dente. Then follow the rest of the recipe. As the cabbage is partly cooked it take no time at all.

I have been making this for 40 years or better! Was in the Army stationed in Texas during the 70’s and 80’s! Had this in a Mom and Pop restaurant and hit me like I can make this at home! We served with a side of Rice a Roni!
Linda Banks says
I made this often while stationed in Texas (Fort Hood). When our friends came over to eat, they EXPECTED it and would go to the store to get it if there was none already cooked. I learned to forget to cook it because they started to bring it, just in case I’d forgotten AGAIN.

Exactly, that is the way it is made in the Eastern European countries that were previously stuck being part of the former USSR. I have family that were all over the area and the Middle East and this is how we eat this same recipe. Never bacon..
