Homemade Whole Wheat SLOW COOKER Bread recipe that’s so easy to make! This simple recipe is made in the crock pot and uses honey instead of sugar. This bread is healthy and great for clean eating! Use it for sandwiches or for breakfast, I love mine with a little butter and jam!
Whole Wheat Crockpot Bread
Remember my 2 Hour Slow Cooker Bread? I had a few requests for a Whole Wheat version so I baked my heart out one weekend and made this Whole Wheat Slow Cooker Bread, also made in 2 hours!
If you’re anything like me, then you love bread. No, you don’t just love bread, you LOVE LOVE bread. I am pretty sure bread is up there in my top 5 favorite foods of all time. Bread is perfect for sandwiches of course, but it makes the perfect partner for a creamy casserole.
One of my favorite quick breakfast meals is a slice of bread with butter and raspberry jam on it! It’s perfect!
No Sugar Bread Recipe
Instead of sugar like many bread recipes call for, we’re using honey instead to add a little bit of sweetness.
After we add the active dry yeast, let it sit for about 10 minutes until it gets foamy.
Now knead this slow cooker bread and roll it into a ball. Cover for 30 minutes and put in a warm spot. Now watch it..
Double in size!
Now throw it in your slow cooker crockpot and watch your dough rise into a beautiful loaf of Whole Wheat Bread. Wasn’t that easy?
This bread is the perfect combination of crusty and soft in the inside. The rosemary (optional) on top adds a nice touch of flavor and scent.
Hope you enjoy this easy bread recipe!

Whole Wheat Slow Cooker Bread
PrintIngredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- rosemary optional
Instructions
- Pour warm water into a large bowl. Add honey and mix until dissolved. Add dry yeast and stir. Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy. I always find it helps to sit it in a warm spot.
- Add salt to bowl and stir to dissolve. Add vegetable oil.
- Add flour and mix with hands until everything is combined. Knead the dough for 5 minutes and form into a round ball.
- Place dough in olive oil coated bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm spot for 30 minutes to rise, doubling in size.
- Cut a piece of parchment paper and place in bottom of slow cooker. Make sure the parchment paper comes up the bottom of the sides of the slow cooker so when the bread expands it won't stick to the sides. Additionally, I like to spray the parchment paper with nonstick spray.
- Place your dough into slow cooker. Sprinkle with rosemary.
- Cook on HIGH for 2 hours.
- Remove from slow cooker and brush a little bit of butter on top. Place under broiler for about 1 minute until slightly brown. Keep a eye on it and make sure it does not burn! Broiling is not a necessary step but I recommend it to get the top crispy!

Hi miss P💐
Lovely recipe. I was wondering if I can do 2loafs at the same time and how I assemble it into the machine? Also I was thinking about adding some nuts like pumpkin seed walnuts and even raisins. Any ideas? Thank you so much 🥖🍞
Orli from Canada says
Hi miss P🌸
Thank you so much for this idea.
If I want to make double at the same time how am I going to put it in the cooker?
Does it take longer?
And wha kind of seeds can I use to add to Dough ?
Thank you again so much 🍞🥖
Rebecca says
What can you substitute for the honey to make it vegan?
Pamela says
Hey Rebecca, try maple syrup instead!
Shana says
Would it ruin the dough or cause any adverse effects, if the dough sits and rises for more than 30 minutes?
Pamela says
You can let it rise for a bit longer for sure, especially if you don’t have a warm spot for it. How long are you thinking?
Lynn says
Do you preheat the crock pot before placing the bread inside?
Pamela says
Nope, there’s no need to preheat the crock pot.
Diana says
My whole family and I really loved your recipe! With that said, do you think the recipe can be doubled?
Pamela says
Hey Diana, you can double the ingredients, but I would definitely bake 2 loaves in the slow cooker – not 1 giant one. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
Dee says
This recipe is superb. Extremely easy, flavour is great. Easy to modify for other flavours!

Any chance you can omit the oil from the recipe?

Hey Susan, you can try substituting applesauce for oil in this recipe. Enjoy!

Have you tried this substituting with instant yeast? I know in general you can, but how would that affect this recipe?

Hey Monica, I haven’t personally tried this, but I’d love to hear how it turns out if you do!

Dippy says
Hi, can you give measurements for this recipe, I don’t know how much a ‘cup’ is??
Pamela says
Hey Dippy, 1 cup is 8 ounces. If you need the recipe in metric you can use a online converter (easy to google that). Hope this helps.
Kathy says
Thanks for this great recipe! I made my first batch yesterday, and although I wasn’t sure if the dough rose like I thought it would, it turned out perfectly! It’s so much tastier and healthier than the stuff I bought at the store. I had a slice with ghee on it with my breakfast a little while ago. Yummy! 🙂
Mickey says
Can rye flour be substituted?
Pamela says
Hey Mickey, I’ve never tried rye flour but if you try it I’d love to hear how the bread turns out. Thanks!
Reuben says
I used a half cup of rye and cut back the whole wheat even a little more. It takes longer to rise, but it looks perfect.
Pamela says
I’m so happy to hear that this bread turned out great for you!

another great reason why I love my slow cooker. It can do so many different things. This would be great any time of year when time is an issue but when summer is hot and you want fresh bread no oven needed use the slow cooker
