Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage
I love this crock pot recipe because of how easy it is to make. There’s minimal prep time, besides chopping up vegetables, and then you’re ready to go. Just throw everything into your crockpot, set the timer for 6 hours and get ready for your kitchen to smell amazing!
You guys have been telling me that I need to share more of my slow cooker recipes, since you’ve enjoyed my Cabbage and Kielbasa and Cabbage Roll Casserole. So here I am – now it’s time to share Slow Cooker Sausage and Cabbage!
Ingredients for Slow Cooker Sausage
You might already have everything in your kitchen which is going to make this meal even easier! Here’s what you need:
- cabbage, chopped
- potatoes, chopped
- carrots, chopped
- onion, chopped
- minced garlic
- Sweet Italian Sausage
- chicken broth
- salt, pepper, and brown sugar
How to Make this Easy Cabbage Recipe
Add chopped cabbage to the bottom of the slow cooker.
Add in potatoes, carrots, onions and minced garlic. Peeling the potatoes is completely optional and up to you!
Add in the Sweet Italian Sausage. I buy links and chop them up into 2 inch pieces.
Finally add in chicken broth, salt, pepper and brown sugar. Don’t skip the brown sugar, it balances out the cabbage taste nicely.
Now close the lid and cook on LOW. You don’t need to do anything else! 6 hours later…. YUM YUM YUM! Dinner is served!
How to Serve Sausage and Cabbage
You can serve this as is, as now you have a full meal of meat and vegetables! But you can also serve it on top of egg noodles (our usual preference) or rice, and with cornbread on the side.
This is the perfect meal for busy Fall weeknights when school is going on and you have a million other things to take care of. I love knowing there’s a complete meal waiting for us in the kitchen!
I hope you enjoy this easy crockpot recipe soon!

I think this sounds great, I may toss in some Celery, leftover veggiess, or hot sauce. SOunds Perfect for me.

This was a great recipe – simple and as advertised. We used a smoked jalepeno venison sausage to make it healthier, and it came out great! Our slow cooker doesn’t have a time adjust button – on a weekday, could we leave it on low for 8 hours (when our crockpot automatically turns to warm), or would it get mushy?
Pamela says
Hey Fe, thanks for commenting and letting me know that you liked this slow cooker recipe! That smoked jalapeno sausage sounds amazing btw! 8 hours might be ok, but I worry the potatoes are going to turn into mush, that’s why I usually only do 6 hours on low. I think if you cut the vegetables so they are larger (not so bite sized), it could help prevent the vegetables from turning mushy. Hope this helps!

This was a simple recipe to make. I used hot Italian Sausage because that’s what I already had on hand. I also substituted red onions for the white onions and mixed cabbage with bok choy. And this is only because I had this on hand. It still turned out amazing!!
Pamela says
Thank you for commenting and sharing! I love the idea of using bok choy mixed with cabbage, great for when we have a overload of bok choy in our garden, I’ll try this next time! I’m happy you liked it!
Deb says
This is delicious!!! I’m not really a cabbage person but i have had to go back for seconds. The family say it’s one of the best things I’ve made. 10 minutes preparing time, can’t beat that and I cook all the time!
Pamela says
Hey Deb, your comment makes me so happy! I’m glad to hear it was a hit with your family, and that you liked it too! 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
Vero says
I made this tonight. Thank you for a great recipe. I didn’t like the color of the sausage so I took it out and fried it up at the end. I know I’m extra lol. But I may try browning at the begining just for my fear of undercooked meat and the color. But yummy.
Pamela says
Hey Vero, I like that you’re extra! Hah. Glad to hear you liked the recipe, thanks for commenting! 🙂

Wont allow me to see the recipe unless I download some site that I do not want in my computer.
So your site is useless to me.

when I was a kid my mom made this in a pressure cooker (cabbage, potatoes and polish kielbasa)
Any idea how would I make this in a regular pot on the stove?
{my crockpot broke last week—darn}
please help–I can’t wait to make this for my kids [i have been telling them about this recipe all week]
Paige says
I made this the other night. I was out of carrots so I left them out. Something about adding the brown sugar really made a difference because this was very delicious.
Pamela says
Hey Paige, I’m so happy you enjoyed this slow cooker meal. Thanks for commenting!
Connie says
Could you do this recipe in an instant Pot? If yes,
How long would you cook it?
The recipe sounds wonderful!
Pamela says
Hey Connie, I don’t see why you couldn’t make this in the Instant Pot. I have never made it this way though, so I don’t have accurate timing. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how it turns out.
Kim says
This is an amazing recipe, making it tonight for the third time. Although I use hot Italian sausage. So so good. 😊
Pamela says
Hey Kim, thanks for commenting and letting me know you like this recipe! I love the switch to Hot Italian Sausage! Keep on enjoying!
Lori A Lubold says
do you stir this at all while it is cooking in the crockpot?
Pamela says
Hey Lori, I will usually just stir it at the very end with a few minutes left, just before serving. Enjoy this recipe!
Bill says
I like your recipe. I am wondering can I make a suggestion? For my crock pot, no potatoes, no carrots, no spices except use black pepper on top. For instance, cabbage, onions, cut up sausage, mushrooms and black pepper on top? Just asking. What do you think?
Pamela says
Hey Bill, you could definitely try that! I would just suggest adding the mushrooms half way through, so they don’t overcook. Enjoy!
Kim says
Do you take the skin off the Italian sausage before putting it in the crock pot?
Pamela says
No, I don’t. Enjoy the recipe!
Diana Rawlings says
What size crock pot?
Pamela says
I usually use my 6 qt for this. If you have a smaller one, you could reduce the amount of cabbage.
Stacey says
omg soo good.. My fav by far. I did however use a pound of mild and a pound of hot sausage. Also I added some crispy bacon, and half cup more broth.. love broth.. EVERYONE loved it and think I’ll be asked to make this for years to come.. YUMS~~
Pamela says
Hey Stacey, thanks so much for commenting! I’m so happy to hear it was a hit with everyone! Love the crispy bacon addition!
Tanya says
I made this for my family for our Sunday dinner today and it was amazing! I was skeptical of the amount of broth but the potatoes were perfect! Will add this to our meal plan now!
Pamela says
Thanks so much for commenting Tanya, I’m so happy to hear you and your family liked this meal!
Lior says
This recipe works very well and is very tasty, am on my second going of it now! Super useful for a student during assignment season !
I am wondering and may consider next time, if the sausages I use don’t have a very appetising colour (like the Italianate ones) they turn a bit grey once cooked, so possibly frying them quickly before to caramelise them a little for colour? I know it’s an extra step but might be useful
jim Rhea says
Is one cup of chicken broth enough to cover all the ingredients ?
Pamela says
Hey Jim, yes, it’s enough. The veggies break down nicely and everything tastes delicious. We just had this for dinner tonight – our house smells great!
Joan says
Can I use sweet potatoes instead?
Pamela says
Hey Joan, you sure can! Enjoy the recipe!
Patti-Ann Tanis says
Does this freeze well?
Pamela says
Hey Patti – Yup, sure does! Enjoy this recipe!
Chris says
I was gifted an immense cabbage and spent my morning branching and freezing. Let’s hope this works with frozen cabbage as well lol.
