Easy to make fluffy rolls made in the bread machine. These dinner rolls taste like Hawaiian sweet rolls and are delicious with a little butter on top! Made with pantry staples for simple bread making!
Well, I’m all about bread making right now. This week I made a loaf of whole wheat bread, corn bread, sugar cookies (in the bread machine) and now these homemade rolls. Being in the kitchen is definitely helping me escape these stressful times, and what’s better than making fluffy little rolls that I can dab with butter and jam?
My entire family has been gobbling these up and love them so much. Matthew thinks they taste just like store bought Hawaiian sweet rolls (one of his favorites), so I’m going to bet this batch I made yesterday will be gone by night’s end!
Need to get your mind off the news? Then run to the kitchen (don’t trip over your cat!), grab your bread machine and make these fluffy bread machine rolls! Trust me, on first bite, everything is going to be ok!
Ingredients
Here’s all the ingredients that you need for this homemade rolls recipe. This is a very simple “from your pantry” recipe.
- milk (I use whole milk but you can use skim milk too)
- bread flour
- sugar
- salt
- butter (melted)
- active dry yeast
Step by Step Directions
Place all the ingredients into the pan of your bread machine. You want to set it on DOUGH cycle and press START.
Allow the bread machine to do it’s thing and wait until it completely finishes. You should see a fluffy ball of dough when you open it up!
Place dough on a floured surface and lightly deflate the dough, using your fingers to press down.
The recipe makes approximately 16 rolls so you’ll want to divide the dough up into 16. I like to rip the dough into 4, and then dive each piece into 4 again.
Place in 13×9 pan, placing them next to each other.
Now cover with a towel and allow to rise for 1 hour. Please let them rise for the entire hour. It’s important they fully rise and this gets them nice and fluffy! And during this time the blog’s photographer stopped by and took a picture! 🙂
Here they are after 1 hour of rising. I call them little soft snuggle balls of happiness!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake for 16-18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Gorgeous!
Allow to cool for a little bit so you don’t burn your mouth, but eat them while they’re still warm! OOOOOH. Delicious!
To Egg Wash or Not to Egg Wash?
That is the question!
Look I’m not a big fan of the egg wash on top of breads and rolls. Call me crazy, but it seems like a wasted egg. I like to just grab some butter and lightly brush it on top. This gives them a buttery taste and a glossy shine, in my opinion, they’re perfect like this!
What Order Should I put Ingredients into the Bread Machine?
First, check out your bread machine manufacturer manual that should list the order of ingredients. If you don’t have the manual you can check out their website. It’s important that you put the ingredients in the correct order as it makes a difference on the way the dough is mixed, kneaded and then affects rising.
For our specific machine the ingredients goes in the order: milk, bread flour, sugar, salt, butter and active dry yeast.
Want to freeze these?
First of all, good luck not eating all these rolls within the first day. They’re that delicious. I plead the fifth in telling you how many rolls I ate! If you actually don’t eat them all and want to freeze them, that’s easy to do!
Bake rolls as usual and allow to cool completely. Wrap up in aluminum foil and then place in a freezer bag. When ready to eat, remove from foil and bag and place in the microwave for a few seconds. They won’t take long to heat back up.
I hope you enjoy these Fluffy Bread Machine Rolls! Please leave a comment if you make them!

Fluffy Bread Machine Rolls
PrintIngredients
- 1 1/4 cup milk
- 3 cups bread flour
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
- 1 (.25 ounce) package of active dry yeast (this equals 2 1/4 teaspoons)
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients into the pan of your bread machine in the order that your machine manufacturer recommends. Mine recommends them in order that I listed in ingredients. Set on DOUGH cycle and press START.
- When machine is finished remove dough from machine pan and place on floured surface, lightly deflating it with your hands. Divide the dough into 16 equal size pieces and and roll into round balls.
- Spray a 13×9 pan with nonstick spray and place the dough balls onto the pan, placing them directly next to each other. Cover pan with cloth towel and let rise for 60 minutes. During this time the rolls will almost double in size.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake rolls for 16-18 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and allow to cool down to touch.
- When serving the rolls, brush a little bit of butter on top of each one to give them a glossy finish.

I made these rolls last night, and am making another batch tonight because they turned out THAT GOOD. I needed to make sure the yeast was still active, so I warmed the milk and sugar to 100ยฐ and then added the yeast. The yeast/milk/sugar went in before the flour/butter/salt in the breadmachine. I am saving this recipe to make time and time again. I opted to doing a butter baste, rather than the egg. Thank you for sharing this recipe, and for the people who are considering this recipe, do yourself a favor and commit to this one. ๐๐

Than you SO much for this recipe! Itโs became our householdโs favorite go to dinner roll recipe. We even use it for cinnamon rolls and buttery garlic knots that are divine. Recipe amounts are spot on. No issues whatsoever. Just a perfect bread recipe!

Salted or unsalted butter?

Can’t wait to try this tonight.

do you have a bread machine roll mix for multi grain and wholemeal versions or can you use this awesome recipe with the different flours.

Such a great recipe. Happy.
Taylor says
These were fantastic. Turned out exactly as described and were really easy to make. I love that they donโt have as much butter as other recipes Iโve used in the past, but somehow taste even better? My new go-to for rolls.
Sudie says
This is such a good recipe! It is my absolute Go To never fail recipe! Love it!
Mim says
This came out really wet and sticky! I had to add a lot of flour to be able to mould it into shapre. Is is one quarter cup of flour or one AND a quarter cup of flour?!
Pamela Reed says
Hey Mim, it’s 3 cups of bread flour.
Susan says
These are so impressive! Great taste, really light, easy to make and great the next day if you can hide them from your family.
Kimberlee Ann Napoles says
I made these with oat milk and dairy free butter and they came out GREAT! Also used AP flour.
Christy says
Could I use this recipe to also make cheesy garlic rolls or cinnamon rolls?
Pamela Reed says
Absolutely, if you look at past comments you’ll see lots of people do this successfully. Enjoy!
Peggy Wilbur says
Oops, I see, it makes about 16! I need to read things more carefully!!!
Joe Dough says
I went to 15 because a 9×13 pan is a little off in measurement for a 4×4 layout. So I went 3×5. We will see in about an hour to see if it works. Of course I made 16 balls so one had to get tossed.
Peggy Wilbur says
Theyโre so delicious and you provided the pan size but not the quantity range it makes. Or did I miss that?
Kimberly says
She says 16 rolls! Probably not near enough. Mine are in the bread machine now. Canโt wait for dinner!!
Sarah D says
This has been my go-to recipe. My boys love these rolls! I make them at least once a week and theyโre gone by the next day.
Shari says
These are amazing! I made them for a Christmas brunch – My guests asked to take some home. I’m having to make more for my husband and me! I used all purpose flour, but added 1.5 tsp per cup of flour. These are now replacing my other roll recipe.
Karla says
Is the ratio of liquid to flour correct? Itโs more like a batter than dough when my mini is mixing and doesnโt seem to turn into a โdough ballโ.
Pamela Reed says
Yes, it’s correct.
Kim says
I had the same issue! Had to add another cup and a half of flour
Donna says
Easy recipe and very good! This recipe got me to use my bread machine that was sitting in a corner never used! Just made another batch today…thank you!
Pamela Reed says
So happy to hear that Donna! These rolls and our bread machine are best friends! ๐

These are absolutely amazing! Best rolls I have ever made! Every time I go to a family gathering they beg me to bring these!! Question, can you substitute the flour with whole wheat bread flour and what adjustments would need to be made? Thank you so much!!
Beverly Utnage says
This recipe is amazing! Made 2 batches for Thanksgiving. I’m known for my yeast bread disasters, but not this time. I thank you and my family thanks you!

OMG, these rolls were the best! I was looking for the sweet roll recipe I got from my late uncle some years ago but couldn’t find it. Did a quick internet search and decided on this recipe. It was PERFECT! Especially with this being my first time using a bread machine. The family loved these and have already requested them for Christmas dinner. These are so easy to make. I’m happy to say I’ve found my go-to roll recipe!
Troy says
Ridiculously good rolls! Such an easy recipe that I wished I had as a beginning bread maker. Weโve made them three days in a row and they disappear. Great the next day. I have to hide them if I want them the next day.
Jenn says
The best and easiest recipe! I actually use this recipe for my cinnamon buns and they turn out amazing everytime!
Kim Denise says
First of all, this recipe is so freaking good! The rolls are amazing. I am new to using a bread machine and I stupidly didnโt realize that the dough cycle would take an hour and a half. The instructions say that the total cook time is an hour and 15 minutes, so I completely miss-timed my dinner. The whole thing was an hour and a half later than I told people, and they were a little annoyed lol! BUT, all agreed that the rolls were worth waiting for. Thank you for this recipe!
Shannon Sherwood says
This recipe is a keeper for sure! These are so fluffy and delicious. I canโt wait to bring them to my family for Thanksgiving! I might try using the dough to make monkey read sometime and see how that comes out. Thanks for the great recipe!
Tay says
I made these last week to test before Thanksgivingโฆand have made them
2 more times now!! Delicious!! My 4 littles LOVED these! This recipe is outstanding! Thank you for the something that will be made for years to come ๐
