Crunchy baked apple chips made with 2 ingredients: apples and sea salt. These will become your new favorite Fall snack when you’re apple picking! Recipe includes option to bake in the oven or air fryer!
Quick and easy homemade apple chips
Make these Homemade Baked Apple Chips your new favorite go-to snack! Perfect for fall, an after school snack, or a way to use up tons of leftover apples, this crunchy treat is easy to make in the oven using just 2 ingredients: apples and salt.
Apples are sliced super thin, sprinkled with salt, and then left to bake in the oven for just over an hour. They crisp up and turn golden brown, transforming into a crispy, never chewy, and subtly sweet snack. You can add as many fun flavors to them as well, like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cinnamon sugar.

What kind of apples are best for apple chips?
You can make apple chips out of almost any kind of apple. I recommend (if possible) using freshly picked orchard apples for the very best flavors. Otherwise, any of these apples will do:
- Granny Smith
- Gala
- Empire
- Golden Delicious
- Honeycrisp
- Red Delicious
- Fuji
- Pink Lady
- McIntosh
- Ambrosia
How to bake apple chips in the oven
This is a fairly hands-off recipe. Once the apples are prepped and sliced, you simply have to just wait for them to bake! It’s easy peasy:
Use an apple corer to remove the core of each apple. Slice them into very thin, consistent slices using a sharp knife or mandolin. If you don’t have a corer, that’s ok, just remove the seeds and slice apples thin.
Line the slices in an even layer on a baking sheet and sprinkle them with sea salt.
Bake the apples for 45 minutes. Take them out of the oven, flip, sprinkle with more salt, and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes.
Once the apple chips are nice and crispy, let them cool completely on a wire rack. Dig in and enjoy!
Make Apple Chips in Air Fryer
You can easily use your air fryer to make apple chips instead of the oven, but the process is more hands on because you’ll need to work in batches. Here’s how it’s done:
- Place the cored and sliced apples in an even layer in the air fryer basket and sprinkle salt on top.
- Preheat the air fryer to 390ºF. Cook the apples for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Take them out of the air fryer if they’re nice and crisp or let them cook for another minute or two. Let them cool completely, then enjoy!
Tips and tricks
- Slice ‘em thin! A mandolin will be your best friend when slicing the apples really thin. They’ll turn out chewy rather than crisp if you slice them any thicker than 1/8 of an inch.
- Salty or sweet? All you need is a sprinkle of salt to make these chips more salty and savory. If you prefer them sweeter, replace the salt with cinnamon, powdered sugar, nutmeg, or cinnamon sugar.
- Peel or no peel? I like to leave the peel on for a hint of color but you’re welcome to peel the apples before slicing if you’d like.
How to Store Apple Chips
Store apple chips in an airtight container or plastic bag at room temperature in a cool dark cabinet, good for about a week.

I love apple chips, my great- great grandmother used to make them in bulk.
I’m lazy to make them so I buy them from the Amish Farmer’s Market, they have 2 varieties sour and sweet apple. Sour is awesome!

I love your new banner! I wish I had the graphic design skills to make something like that. What program do you use? These apple chips looks great! I’ve never tried to make any sort of chip so I think i’m going to have to attempt this…and i love anything with salt 🙂 Growing up I didn’t have Christmas (since I’m Jewish) but now that I’m married to an Xmas celebrator, we open presents on Christmas morning. Although Nate tells me that when he was little, they were each allowed to open one present on Chrismas Eve 🙂
Rika says
I love your banner and the blinking Christmas lights, it’s Christmasy & adorable! I usually open my presents on Xmas morning, sometimes the night before when some family friends had to leave on Xmas day. The sea salt baked apple chips look and sound tasty, I love salty and sweet chips!

I LOVE your new banner! It’s awesome! I am all done Christmas shopping. We typically open presents on Christmas morning, but we have done it on Christmas Eve. There’s just something about spending Christmas morning watching a Christmas movie and opening presents without a care in the world. I need to make these apple chips as present opening fuel!

Love the new banner – the lights and Santa cats are sooo cute!!
Totally not done shopping. My preteen nephew is tough to shop for! I don’t know what is hip with that age group! It also doesn’t help that my hubby likes to be surprised. AGHHH! So much pressure! I love to shop from a list!!
I can’t wait to make these! I have wanted to make apple chips for so long – and these look so good with the sea salt. I actually put salt on a lot of my fruit – it really enhances the flavor!!
Thanks, Pamela! 🙂
Pamela says
Love the idea of adding a pinch of salt to fruit, something to balance the sweetness. Good luck with shopping Gretchen!

I have a few relatives that are soooo hard to shop for – so the last few years I’ve just done homemade treats (which has gone over very well!). And we open presents Christmas morning : ) These apple chips sound like such a great snack – I’m not a big potato chip person either.
Pamela says
Homemade treats are such a nice gesture, love that Ashley!

I love your festive banner! When I was a kid it was torture we had to wait till Christmas afternoon to open our gifts because we had to wait for our Grandparents to come over. These days it tends to be Christmas morning so we can get everything cleared up ready for a day of eating to excess 😀 By the way I love the sound of these apple chips, I love a health alternative for a snacky food.

I love the idea of home made apple chips! The ones at Whole Foods are ridiculously expensive and I can finish the tiny bag in like 2 minutes 😉 My dad is SO difficult to shop for when it comes to Christmas presents! I’m dedicating this Saturday to hitting the mall and trying to finish up!

I’m not that ready for Christmas…since I’m going to New Zealand on the 22nd, I feel like I am kind of skipping Christmas this year 🙁 Truthfully I’m not, I will be celebrating it there, but it’s without my family! It’s going to be very different.
Apple chips with SEA SALT!? Why did I not think to make this sweet and salty combo…I would make these in my dehydrator. They sound amazing!
Jessica @ Jessiker Bakes says
