The BEST Cinnamon Sugar Applesauce recipe, ready in 20 minutes on the stovetop! All you need is apples, cinnamon, sugar and lemon juice! It’s easy to make and tastes delicious! Perfect for canning if you have a bunch of apples from apple picking!
“Best”. I know that’s pretty bold, but this applesauce is just that good. Recipes don’t have to be fancy to be good, and this easy applesauce will prove that in 20 minutes. After eating a spoonful I think you’ll agree this is the best too!
Ingredients
The ingredients are incredibly basic, you probably already have everything!
- apples (any variety will do)
- sugar (want to make it unsweetened? skip this!)
- cinnamon
- lemon juice
If you want to double or triple this recipe, just adjust the ingredient amounts.
How to Make
Peel and core apples, cut them into quarters.
Bring a large pot of water with a steamer basket to a boil. Add apples and steam until soft, about 15 minutes. Note: if you don’t have a steamer basket, you can boil the apples directly in a pot with a small amount of water, making sure to drain before moving on to the next step.
Remove apples from steamer and place in bowl. Using a potato masher or spoon, mash until smooth. You can also use a food processor to make this easier.
Add sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice to bowl and stir.
Serve immediately or put in refrigerator to use within 1 week.
Want to make with a food strainer?
I’m also including food strainer directions as I know some people like this method! I have a Weston food strainer which is really great for applesauce, pumpkin puree and tomato sauce because it peels, cores and deseeds for you!
- Cut your apples into quarters. You don’t need to peel or core them.
- Bring a large pot of water with a steamer basket to a boil. Add apples and steam until soft, about 15 minutes.
- Process apples through food strainer. I like to run the apple peels through twice. Place pureed apples in bowl.
- Add sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice to apple puree bowl and stir.
- Serve immediately or put in refrigerator to use within 1 week. Alternatively, you can can or freeze this recipe.
What can you do with applesauce?
- Make these Applesauce Brownie Bars!
- Eat plain (my favorite way!)
- Throw fruits on top, like blueberries or strawberries, for a fresh dessert.
- Add to your meatloaf, this makes it extra moist.
- Bake with it (cookies, brownies, bread, etc), or make pancakes and waffles- subsitute applesauce for oil.
- Add to your smoothie (you can freeze applesauce in ice cube trays)
- Peanut butter and applesauce sandwich! (You gotta try it!)
I hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Sugar Applesauce! I can’t get enough of it! PS. Try my crockpot applesauce recipe too!

My mom used to make us homemade applesauce – and I used to make it for my sons. I haven’t made it in the longest time but your post, with those yummy photos, has “fired me up” to make some soon. First, I’ve gotta get my good old-fashioned “do it by hand” or food mill from our Pocono Mt. house….
I, too, had never seen a machine like yours!
grace says
i’d make a lot more applesauce if i had a strainer like that! glad you included cinnamon–applesauce isn’t complete without it. 🙂

You’re going to be such a good mom when you have kids. You already make the best stuff and will be able to make your own baby food! I love applesauce, it’s one of those dishes that brings me back to my childhood. I use to eat a whole jar full. It just goes down so easy.
I also think you should open up a little farm shop. I could see your shelves lined with fresh produce, jars of applesauce, tomato sauce, pumpkin puree, you name it. 🙂 Jackie
Pamela says
Hahahaha, aww thanks Jackie! That was a very nice comment, made me smile. I would love to have a little farm shop, I’d design the labels and all the labels would have smiling faces on depending on the fruit or vegetable, like smiling apples, happy pumpkins, excited strawberries. What a dream! 🙂

I adore the fact that in July the first two things on your blog are applesauce and a pumpkin. If I could live in a perpetual fall, I would do just that.
Pamela says
Hahaha, I know.. I can’t help myself! 🙂 I love Fall too… such a great time of the year.
Katie says
I beg to differ. My grandma made the best applesauce. However, I’m pretty sure the recipe was identical to yours, so we’ll call it a tie.
I ate that stuff all year long. Every time we went to visit them, she’d pull a container from the freezer and we’d go to town on it. And then she’d send us home with a few more. Dang. Now I want applesause.
I don’t have a food mill (now I want one, thanks) but I do have a corer/slicer/peeler contraption that is awesome.
Sarah | The Sugar Hit says
Ummm, yum. I believe you when you say best. Because one of my favourite things as a kid was cinnamon sugar, sprinkled on apple sauce, eaten with a spoon. Add some creme fraiche or sour cream? Heaven.
Pamela says
Yum! That sounds like one fantastic snack!
Miss Messy says
I would actually eat this on everything! It looks amazing.
Pamela says
Yummy Yum! Thank you!

Oh, this is making me crave applesauce! I usually have to wait until the fall here in Michigan though, when my best friend makes it and I mooch off of her 🙂 But I agree – once you’ve tried homemade, it’s nearly impossible to go back to the store-bought stuff. It’s like night and day!
Pamela says
I totally agree, I’m waiting anxiously for apple picking so I can be making this every week! 🙂

I thought about getting something like a strainer last year when I was canning tomatoes, but I kind of thought I wouldnt find any other uses for it. You proved me wrong! I use applesauce probably every day.
Pamela says
I know what you mean! I have been telling myself to get a strainer every July for tomatoes, but then I always say “next year” and never do. I’m so happy with it, I can’t wait to experiment with pumpkin and potatoes with it too! Oh and it makes fantastic salsa!
