Old-Fashioned Smothered Cabbage is made with tender green cabbage, onions, butter, and simple seasonings, slowly cooked in a skillet until soft and flavorful. It’s a buttery, homemade side dish that tastes just like something Grandma used to make!

Old-Fashioned Smothered Cabbage Just Like Grandma Made

You guys know I love a good cabbage recipe, and this Old-Fashioned Smothered Cabbage is right up my alley. It’s buttery, full of flavor, and tastes like something Grandma would put on the dinner table. All you need is a head of cabbage, an onion, some butter, and a few simple seasonings. Nothing fancy happening here, just really good cabbage!

Here’s the thing about cabbage: it gets SO sweet when you cook it until it’s nice and soft. And that’s exactly what we’re doing! We let it cook low and slow until it’s tender, then take the lid off and give it a few more minutes to get some of those little browned, crispy pieces. Those are my favorite, so I might be guilty of picking a few straight out of the skillet.

This smothered cabbage goes with just about anything, which is another reason I love it. Give me a big spoonful alongside Oven Roasted Sausage and Chunky Stewed Potatoes, and I’m one happy girl. It’s the kind of simple, homemade dinner that doesn’t need anything fancy to make everyone at the table happy.

A wooden spoon stirs a pan of sautéed cabbage with browned edges.

Tips for the Best Smothered Cabbage

  • Don’t rush it. Cooking the cabbage slowly brings out its natural sweetness.
  • Want crispy edges? Remove the lid for the last 5–10 minutes and let some of the cabbage get lightly browned.
  • Don’t worry if your skillet looks full. Cabbage shrinks a LOT as it cooks, so add it in batches if needed.

How to Make My Smothered Cabbage

Cook onions and garlic in butter.

Sliced onions and minced garlic sautéing in oil in a pan.

Add chopped cabbage and spices. I know this looks like a alot of cabbage but it will wilt down significantly!

Chopped raw cabbage in a pan, seasoned with a dusting of red and black spices.

Cover and cook until cabbage is soft. This takes around 25 minutes.

Remove lid and cook a little longer. This is going to make sure the extra liquid evaporates and the cabbage on the bottom is going to brown – so good!!

Serve and eat it all!

Hope you really like this recipe! It just screams Sunday dinner to me.

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 1 day day 45 minutes minutes
Total Time 1 day day 55 minutes minutes
serves 6

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head green cabbage about 2 pounds, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a large deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened.
  • Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add chopped cabbage, broth, salt, pepper and smoked paprika. Toss to combine. The cabbage will shrink as it cooks, so add it in batches if necessary.
  • Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is very tender.
  • Remove lid and cook for another 5–10 minutes to evaporate excess liquid and develop a little browning.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Serve warm alongside potatoes, sausage, or your favorite main dish.

Notes

Store leftover cabbage in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat with a little butter until warmed through. You can also microwave it.
