Old-Fashioned Smothered Cabbage is made with tender green cabbage, onions, butter, and simple seasonings, slowly cooked in a skillet until soft and flavorful. This Southern-style cabbage recipe is a delicious, buttery side dish that tastes just like something Grandma used to make!
Melt butter in a large deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened.
Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
Add chopped cabbage, broth, salt, pepper and smoked paprika. Toss to combine. The cabbage will shrink as it cooks, so add it in batches if necessary.
Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is very tender.
Remove lid and cook for another 5–10 minutes to evaporate excess liquid and develop a little browning.
Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Serve warm alongside potatoes, sausage, or your favorite main dish.
Notes
Store leftover cabbage in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat with a little butter until warmed through. You can also microwave it.
