NO BUTTER Homemade Pancakes recipe are fluffy and so easy to make! They’re so good you won’t miss the butter at all, that makes them more healthy too! These made from scratch pancakes are my favorite Saturday morning breakfast, my family considers them the best! Dairy Free/Vegan option too!
How to Make Pancakes From Scratch
Don’t have any butter? That’s ok. Today we’re going to make some Homemade No Butter Homemade Pancakes. They’re just as delicious as butter made ones… maybe even better! We love these pancakes so much in our house that they became our #1 pancake recipe!
How to Make Pancakes With No Butter
I wish I could say these pancakes were created because suddenly I wanted to make healthy pancakes and do without the butter, but the truth is that we were out of butter. Do you often run out of butter too?
No Butter Pancakes Recipe
To make these pancakes you’ll need:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup milk or almond milk
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
How to Make Homemade Pancakes
Instead of butter we’re going to use 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and 1 cup milk for the liquid ingredients. Even with no butter, these pancakes are going to be extra fluffy and moist!
First you’ll want to mix your dry ingredients together…like the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon!
Now add your wet ingredients to the bowl, the milk, eggs, oil and vanilla! Don’t you love how you probably already have all the ingredients in your kitchen? Btw, I’ve been buying a big bottle of vanilla extract that lasts forever – it’s so much more economical than buying those small bottles!
Spray a griddle or pan with nonstick spray and then heat the batter over medium high heat for a few minutes, making sure to brown both sides of the pancakes!
Dairy Free Pancakes
If you want to make these pancakes dairy free or vegan, that’s easy. Just substitute the milk for almond milk and you’re all set! You should also check out my Vegan Peanut Butter Cookies recipe!
Vegan Pancakes
If you want to make these pancakes vegan, that’s easy too. Instead of using 1 egg, use 1/4 cup applesauce.
Hope this No Butter Pancake recipe helps you if you’re all out of butter too! It might just become your new favorite pancake recipe!
And if you really love them, try making a double or triple batch to freeze! You’ll just need to throw them in a freezer bag to freeze. Then you’ll microwave them just like you do for any store bought frozen pancakes. Except these ones are so much better than store bought pancakes because they’re homemade!
Enjoy the pancakes everyone!

I live in a small town and the shop is quite close to our house so I don’t have that problem hehe. Though now that we’re living in the summer house we do have to drive to the nearest one uuughhh :'( No such thing as online food shopping here!
These pancakes look amaaaaaaaazing! I’d never have said that the butter was missing 😉
Kelly says
It depends on the week or what I’m making but I try to do my grocery shopping all at once but sometimes I have to go back for a few ingredients here and there.
I love that these pancakes have no butter which is something I have to make a grocery run for sometimes. They look absolutely amazing and I wish they would magically appear right in front of me now 🙂
Cindy @ Pick Fresh Foods says
I try to shop once a week, but usually end up having to go back for milk. City living is so different from living in a town or suburb. I love that in a city you can walk everywhere, but the hauling groceries would be tough. That would be a good way for me to not over-buy. 😀
Love these pancakes! Cinnamon and vanilla taste great in pancakes.
Dee @ The Kitchen Snob says
Yum! I’ve never tried cinnamon in my pancakes. Will definitely try this! And I go to the grocery store a couple times a week. I can never seem to get organized enough to remember everything I need for a whole week.
Chris @ The Café Sucré Farine says
My daughter lives in London and it seems that online grocery shopping is the best way to go in a big city. Sounds like you’ve discovered all the secrets to online shopping Pamela! And definitely the secrets to yummy pancakes. These look amazing!
Abbe@This is How I Cook says
Love those cat shots! And the pancakes sound mighty fine, too!
Kelly @ hidden fruits and veggies says
One of the precious few perks of living in a small town! I’m abou 1 mile away from the store. We make 1 huge trip every 10 – 14 days and then casually pop in if we run out of apples or bananas whenever we have time. We also have a subscription to Sam’s Club, which is where we get our paper towels, kitty litter, etc. I definitely use Amazon for my hard to find ingredients though!
Jocelyn (Grandbaby Cakes) says
These pancakes are seriously amazing! I love how easy this seems!
Christine from Cook the Story says
Awesome idea, thank you!
Christin@SpicySouthernKitchen says
These pancakes look so comforting! Love that you made them without butter! I feel like I’m going to the grocery store all the time and the on I like is about a 15 minutes drive each way if there’s any traffic. We used to live just a couple of blocks from a store and I loved it! It was when my son was little and I’d go everyday and fill the bottom of the stroller up. Counted it as my exercise!
Jessica @ Sweet Menu says
These look fabulous! I’ve been on the hunt for a good pancake recipe 🙂
Ella-HomeCookingAdventure says

First, these pancakes sound delicious. Second, I’ve never done the online food shopping thing but I’ve always been curious about it! And last – it’s Sabrina the teenage witch! Well the cat that is : ) I loved that show!

Me too Ashley, I would watch it on TGIF every week!

Is that Salem the cat eating pancakes? LOL!
Pamela, I adore your blog, its so diverse and I always pick up a tip or two. So thank you. You rock. I have never shopped online for food, only clothes. 🙂
Pamela says
It is! Glad you recognized him!

Those delivery services aren’t in my area, but Amazon Pantry is. I’ve been tempted to try it several times and I still might. We have a pretty limited selection of stores and stuff ehre, in small town USA. Luckily, my garden is started to supply most of my needs.
miss messy says
Ahhhhh that salem GIF! YES! ha I used to love him! These pancakes look super 🙂 I online shop because I’m lazy, and because I like planning!
John@Kitchen Riffs says
WE are never out of butter (we store it in our freezer) but this is a great recipe nevertheless. Something to try. We walk a ton, so anything up to 2 miles away (4 miles there and back) is fair game for us — although of course we don’t buy heavy or really bulky things when we walk (we try to do a once-a-week car trip for heavy things). But we go multiple times a week, and usually buy a bag or two of stuff each time. Amazon Prime is terrific for a lot of bulky things, BTW — paper towels, even toilet paper. You have to be careful with prices, but their subscribe and save deals are often (not always) bargains.
Pamela says
Hey John, we use Amazon Prime for all bulky things – including cat food and cat litter, TP, paper towels, etc. I don’t know what I’d do without Prime!
Also we’re big walkers too! Not weird for us to magically appear on a 12 mile walk through the city. 🙂

Haha, I totally used to consider my grocery run as my exercise for the day…I was pretty strong from that since I used to load up! Also, you totally have me craving pancakes right now…these look so yum!

I always make my pancakes without butter – just substitute oil. It works like a charm!
Nora (A Clean Bake) says
When I read the first few sentences, I was all set to recommend Instacart to you, but you’re one step ahead of me!! I have been using it ever since it launched in my city, and I LOOOOVE it. So glad you found it. For butter-related reasons (not that these pancakes aren’t amazing without butter!)…
Kayle (The Cooking Actress) says
oooooooh these pancakes look so incredibly delicious!!!! Perfect way to start the day!
Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says
I could definitely go for one (or three) of these pancakes right about now. Looks delish!

Pamela says
Hey Maya, your comment makes me so happy! I’m thrilled you love these pancakes so much! Thanks for commenting and letting me know!
Laura @ Raise Your Garden says
Yummy looking pancakes~ I think about people in the city all the time, how it must be to haul your groceries home! It’s hard enough driving to the store, putting them in your trunk and hauling them 50 feet to your fridge. But 10-12 blocks? Wow.
Mr. E says
Umm its not that hard bringing your groceries home
Kelly @ Trial and Eater says
I try to go to the grocery store about once a week so that I don’t go overboard and buy too much fresh food that will go bad. I hate grocery shopping, I will have to look into online options!
Angie@Angie's Recipes says
