Ground beef hamburger steaks made on the stovetop with onions and extra beef gravy! Serve next to mashed potatoes for a homemade classic meal!
Ground Beef Hamburger Steaks Recipe
These Hamburger Steaks are so good! How good are they? If a 6, 3 and 1 year old lick their plates clean then you know they are reaaaaallly good!
The main difference between hamburger steaks and Salisbury steak for me (don’t fight me) is 2 things, mushrooms vs onions and also tangy (salisbury steak) vs savory gravy (hamburger steaks).
My Salisbury steak is made with mushrooms and I usually bake it in the oven, while hamburger steaks are made on the stovetop with sliced onions. Both of my recipes always make extra gravy because I’m always team gravy for everything!
If you like Salisbury steak, you’re going to love these Hamburger Steaks! If you like lots of gravy, you’re going to love this recipe! If you have memories of Mom making these for Sunday dinner, then be prepared for the nostalgia to hit!
Lots of Gravy for Mashed Potatoes
This recipe makes double the gravy for these steaks so there’s plenty of extra for our mashed potatoes and crockpot creamed corn on the side!
Use Vanilla Instead of Sherry
I wanted to mention this because when you read the recipe the vanilla might confuse you!
Many steak recipes call for cooking sherry, but I’ll be honest – I never have it in my kitchen! I found that on savory recipes like this, vanilla works amazing as a substitute! If you’re worried about taste, there’s no “vanilla” taste at all and no one will even notice!
How to Make Hamburger Steaks on the Stove
Mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper together in a large bowl.
Shape into 7 even sized balls.
Then use your hand to flatten into steak patties.
Add patties and slices of onions in a large skillet, frying until steak patties are browned on both sides.
Remove steak patties from skillet and sprinkle flour on the onions.
Add beef broth and vanilla, bringing the gravy to a simmer.
Add steak patties back into the skillet, covering with a lid and cook until the beef steaks are completely cooked.
Serve (next to mashed potatoes of course) and enjoy!
Want to add mushrooms?
Some people love mushrooms, some people hate mushrooms, so I always add this as an option! Add sliced mushrooms at the end when you add the beef broth and vanilla, allowing them to simmer with the hamburger steaks.

Hamburger Steaks with Beef Gravy
PrintIngredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium yellow sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- In a large bowl mix together ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper. Form into 7 even sized balls and then flatten into steak patties.
- Add vegetable oil into a large skillet over medium high heat. Add patties, along with slices of onions. Fry until patties are browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Once cooked, transfer patties to a plate.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions in the skillet (if there’s any drippings left in the skillet – keep them there!). Using a spatula, scrape up any beef bits that have stuck to the skillet. Add in beef broth and vanilla, bringing to a light simmer. Continue to stir until broth thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Add beef steaks back into the skillet, scooping gravy to coat them. Cover the skillet and simmer until the patties are fully cooked, about 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway to prevent sticking.
- Serve with mashed potatoes and enjoy!
