Easy Salisbury Steak recipe that is baked in the oven. This simple dinner uses a homemade mushroom gravy, ground beef and bread crumbs. Includes how to freeze instructions if you want to make this ahead of time for a freezer meal.
Looking for a Easy Salisbury Steak Recipe?
This easy Salisbury Steak recipe is one of our favorites and reminds me of the classic TV dinner that I used to love as a kid, but this is completely homemade.
When I find myself with some free time on the weekend, I’ll make 2 or 3 of these homemade meals to put in the freezer so I can grab one when I just don’t have time to cook in the kitchen. The dish is so popular in my house that instead of groans that frozen meals can get, this one receives a big cheer (and even sometimes requested!).
Whenever I make it I always serve with creamy mashed potatoes, crockpot creamed corn and a green veggie, usually Brussels Sprouts or broccoli.

What Ingredients Do I Need?
- 1 10.5 oz can Condensed French Onion Soup
- 1 10.5 oz can Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 egg – beaten
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup fresh mushrooms
The ingredients are simple and the steaks are easy to put together. You’ll only need 1.5 pounds of ground beef for this baked Salisbury Steak recipe but the family size packs of ground beef are usually a deal. I usually get the family pack and use the leftovers for more Salisbury Steak or individually freeze it in 1 pound bags for burgers, casseroles, etc.
How do I make Homemade Salisbury Steak?
In a medium sized bowl combine 1/4 cup of French Onion Soup, 1/4 cup of Cream of Mushroom Soup, ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, pepper and Worcestershire sauce.
Shape into 6 steak patties. Place in 13×9 casserole dish that has been sprayed with nonstick spray. For easy freezer meals I like to use foil pans (this one is “lasagna size”). You could also use a 13×9 casserole dish, but keep in mind if you only have 1 or 2 casserole dishes and you freeze them, you might run into some trouble if you need a fresh dish for dinner one night and realize all yours are in the freezer. For this reason I like to keep a few foil pans on hand (plus they are easy cleanup – no dishes!).
Once the steaks are baking for 30 minutes you can start making your delicious mushroom gravy. In a small bowl combine remaining soup, water, milk and mushrooms. Pour over steak patties. Bake for 10 more minutes.
Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Look at how delicious this looks!
Tip: How to Freeze Salisbury Steak
If you want to make this Salisbury Steak to freeze for make ahead meals, here’s how. After it’s done cooking, allow to cool and then double wrap with aluminum foil on top. Then into the freezer it goes. Once ready to eat, thaw in refrigerator overnight. Remove foil on top and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
And just like that you have the easiest, most delicious Homemade Salisbury Steak that your family is going to love. Make sure to serve with mashed potatoes so you can add some creamy gravy on top of them too!
I hope you enjoy this Salisbury Steak for dinner!

Can I prepare this receipe the night before & put in fridge and bake next day ?
Pamela Reed says
You sure can. You might need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time since it’s coming from the fridge.

Will I need to bake after I prep & put in fridge ?
Pamela Reed says
You have 2 options. You can follow the recipe and bake the salisbury steak completely and then just store in the refrigerator (once cooled down) if you want to serve it in the next few days. Or you can just prep and bake the day of. If you want to prep ahead, prepare it as normal, placing in a 13×9 casserole and then covering it with plastic wrap. When you want to make it, remove from the refrigerator and sit on the counter while you preheat the oven. And then continue to bake it as recipe instructors. You will still need to prepare the soup, water, milk and mushroom mixture, but you can also do this ahead of time if you want too!

Question- If I wish to freeze it- do I just bake the patties for 30 minutes- cool and then add the gravy mix-cover and put in freezer. Or do I need to bake the patties for 30 minutes- add gravy mix to the pan and back in the oven for 10 minutes-cool and place in freezer?
Pamela says
Hey Swan, sorry if the directions confused you. You’ll want to follow the recipe exactly, that includes baking the steak patties and putting the gravy on to cook 10 minutes more – so you’re baking 40 minutes total. After that, allow to cool and then freeze it. Hope this helps!
Swan says
yes , thank you!

Hi! So you cook it, cool it, freeze it, and reheat it from thawed at the same temp for the same time as the original cooking? Have you ever tried freezing it first – raw patties, sauce on top. Thaw and bake? Just curious! Thanks!

I love freezer meals. There’s nothing better than having something homemade on a day there just isn’t enough time to cook. This salisbury steak looks very delicious.

this looks great! I love freezer meals. If I don’t have a freezer full of meals I get a little anxiety about it! I have always used french onion soup for my salisbury steak gravy, it works so perfectly!

I love Salisbury steak! I need to make it soon. It’s been too long. This freezer version is terrific (and freezer meals will be so great to have on hand for you once baby comes).

i’ve never had salisbury steak before. it feels like very stereotypical american 70s food, but as someone who has no problems and perhaps too actively embraces ground beef things (meatloaf!!) and cream of mushroom soup, this sounds delicious.

Those are very much like our Frikadellen over here…my husband’s favourite meal. Yours with mushroom gravy looks particularly comforting and delicious.
