Easy to make fluffy rolls made in the bread machine. These dinner rolls taste like Hawaiian sweet rolls and are delicious with a little butter on top! Made with pantry staples for simple bread making!

Well, I’m all about bread making right now. This week I made a loaf of whole wheat bread, corn bread, sugar cookies (in the bread machine) and now these homemade rolls. Being in the kitchen is definitely helping me escape these stressful times, and what’s better than making fluffy little rolls that I can dab with butter and jam?
My entire family has been gobbling these up and love them so much. Matthew thinks they taste just like store bought Hawaiian sweet rolls (one of his favorites), so I’m going to bet this batch I made yesterday will be gone by night’s end!
Need to get your mind off the news? Then run to the kitchen (don’t trip over your cat!), grab your bread machine and make these fluffy bread machine rolls! Trust me, on first bite, everything is going to be ok!
Ingredients
Here’s all the ingredients that you need for this homemade rolls recipe. This is a very simple “from your pantry” recipe.
- milk (I use whole milk but you can use skim milk too)
- bread flour
- sugar
- salt
- butter (melted)
- active dry yeast
Step by Step Directions
Place all the ingredients into the pan of your bread machine. You want to set it on DOUGH cycle and press START.
Allow the bread machine to do it’s thing and wait until it completely finishes. You should see a fluffy ball of dough when you open it up!
Place dough on a floured surface and lightly deflate the dough, using your fingers to press down.
The recipe makes approximately 16 rolls so you’ll want to divide the dough up into 16. I like to rip the dough into 4, and then dive each piece into 4 again.
Place in 13×9 pan, placing them next to each other.
Now cover with a towel and allow to rise for 1 hour. Please let them rise for the entire hour. It’s important they fully rise and this gets them nice and fluffy! And during this time the blog’s photographer stopped by and took a picture! 🙂
Here they are after 1 hour of rising. I call them little soft snuggle balls of happiness!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake for 16-18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Gorgeous!
Allow to cool for a little bit so you don’t burn your mouth, but eat them while they’re still warm! OOOOOH. Delicious!
To Egg Wash or Not to Egg Wash?
That is the question!
Look I’m not a big fan of the egg wash on top of breads and rolls. Call me crazy, but it seems like a wasted egg. I like to just grab some butter and lightly brush it on top. This gives them a buttery taste and a glossy shine, in my opinion, they’re perfect like this!
What Order Should I put Ingredients into the Bread Machine?
First, check out your bread machine manufacturer manual that should list the order of ingredients. If you don’t have the manual you can check out their website. It’s important that you put the ingredients in the correct order as it makes a difference on the way the dough is mixed, kneaded and then affects rising.
For our specific machine the ingredients goes in the order: milk, bread flour, sugar, salt, butter and active dry yeast.
Want to freeze these?
First of all, good luck not eating all these rolls within the first day. They’re that delicious. I plead the fifth in telling you how many rolls I ate! If you actually don’t eat them all and want to freeze them, that’s easy to do!
Bake rolls as usual and allow to cool completely. Wrap up in aluminum foil and then place in a freezer bag. When ready to eat, remove from foil and bag and place in the microwave for a few seconds. They won’t take long to heat back up.
I hope you enjoy these Fluffy Bread Machine Rolls! Please leave a comment if you make them!

Fluffy Bread Machine Rolls
PrintIngredients

- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
- 1 (.25 ounce) package of active dry yeast (this equals 2 1/4 teaspoons)
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients into the pan of your bread machine in the order that your machine manufacturer recommends. Mine recommends them in order that I listed in ingredients. Set on DOUGH cycle and press START.
- When machine is finished remove dough from machine pan and place on floured surface, lightly deflating it with your hands. Divide the dough into 16 equal size pieces and and roll into round balls.
- Spray a 13×9 pan with nonstick spray and place the dough balls onto the pan, placing them directly next to each other. Cover pan with cloth towel and let rise for 60 minutes. During this time the rolls will almost double in size.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake rolls for 16-18 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and allow to cool down to touch.
- When serving the rolls, brush a little bit of butter on top of each one to give them a glossy finish.

Fantastic!! You saved me from buying store-bought rolls again this year. Easy recipe. Delicious recipe.
Amanda says
I am about to make these but have a question! Do I bake them and then freeze or is it better to freeze the dough, thaw and bake? Thanks!
Pamela says
Hey Amanda, honestly, both methods work and will result in delicious rolls. Personally, I prefer to bake them completely, freeze, and then thaw/warm up when needed. This is great for time saving as the rolls are already done so you don’t have much work.
Jenn Lichtman says
And it’s ok to bake and freeze overnight as I’m making today for thanksgiving tomorrow

Can I substitute honey for the sugar? If so what is the ratio?
Pamela says
You can, I would use 2 tablespoons honey as it’s sweeter than sugar.
BonnieR says
Made them today light and fluffy and delicious!

I did a test run yesterday on this recipe for Thanksgiving. I made the dough in the bread machine and these are the best homemade rolls I have ever made. We will be traveling tomorrow so I divided yesterdays test run in half and froze half of the rolls before baking and baked the rest for tasting. This morning I put the frozen rolls out to thaw and let rise. They were as good as the ones I baked yesterday, so today I am making 3 more recipes and will try making cinnamon rolls as well..
Karen says
So. Total time for recipe is incorrect: should be 3 hrs. 1 hr 30 min in dough cycle; 1 hr to rise; rest of time to pull apart and bake. Now. The look and taste: FANTASTIC!!! Love them! This was test trial for Thanksgiving. And it worked. So proud i got em right. TY

Kris says
Absolutely necessity for any comfort food meal. Stew, chicken and dumplings, Biscuits & gravy, Thanksgiving etc. So fluffy and perfect.
Jan Payne says
I want to make these for Thanksgiving ahead of time. How would they do baking then freezing and reheating?
Pamela says
I do this all the time and they’re delicious!
Niki says
Turned out great!!! I have made them twice already. My son, who is a total bread snob requested another batch, as he ate nearly the whole previous batch.
Pamela says
That makes me so happy to hear! Glad they were a hit! Thanks for taking the time to comment. ๐
Vickie says
Turned out very light and fluffy. They are very good tasting, however a little flat for just butter. I am not a big salt fan, but I will add next time.

I make this recipe with canned coconut milk and vegan butter for my 3 year old vegan grandson Ronan. We ALL love these rolls. I use a 12 cup muffin pan and they don’t last an hour around our house!! Thanks so much for sharing your recipes with us.

Homemade bread rolls, no matter how delicious, tend to be quite…robust. Even if made in the machine with a pre-prepared mix. I was looking for something softer, more like those that invariably sell out at a bakery by noon. The sort you can make into a soft sandwich.
These are terrific! Exactly what I was looking for. They’re so soft when they come out of the oven, you can’t quite believe they’re cooked through, but if you tap one on the bottom, they do still have that hollow sound.
Linda says
Second time making this recipe! They seem to be no fail! I love these rolls and are so easy to make. I need to try your other recipes now.
Sarah says
These are great. They didn’t really taste like Hawaiian rolls to us but they disappeared just as fast. I have to make two batches now if i want them to actually last till dinner around my family. I want to try and make them into a longer bun kinda like a mini hoagie for another recipe i have but since this was only the second bread I’ve done without the bread machine finishing everything im not sure about how it will affect cooking time. If i change the shape to something bigger how would i adjust the cooking time?
Aseaba Arnold says
Turned out perfect! My husband and 4 kids DEVOURED them. Thank so much for this new staple!
Jayne says
Thanks so much for this recipe. I’ve made them loads for bbq’s, lunches and just because I can! They are fab. Quick question….could I use this recipe to make a white loaf too and if so, how long would I bake it for? Thanks again.
Sammie says
I made these rolls for the first time today in my breadmaker. I swapped about half a cup of brown flour for the white. I was thinking they might be too sweet. But, nothing to worry about! Beautiful fluffy, light rolls that everyone loves. I made 12 rolls as I wanted them larger to fill for lunch, but they still turned out perfect. The ingredients and instructions are simple to follow and to produce fabulous rolls! Thank you and I’m so glad I found this recipe.

I am constantly asked to make these rolls. They are awesome!

Best roll Iโve every made!!! So soft, pillowy and just the right amount of sweetness. Hubs loved them and also got the seal of approval from my 8 year old. Agree that they taste just like Texas Roadhouse rolls, not a sweet as Hawaiian rolls IMO. Made 15 rolls so that I would have 3 rows of 5 rolls. The dough was very easy to work with – not tacky at all and very smooth. Will absolutely be making these again.
Rebecca says
I made these today for the first time, and my family devoured them. Thumbs-up from both children (and a husband who claims he isnโt picky but…). The recipe is perfect as is. Thank you so much for sharing : )

So easy to assemble in machine. Just let your machine do the work for you. These are so hard to resist. Love this recipe more than any I have tried. Thank you for sharing.
Arline says
Made these for the first time tonight and my family loved them, will definitely make them again. The only request was that I make some cinnamon butter next time. They said they were like the ones at Texas Roadhouse restaurant

I love this recipe. I have made a lot in the last few months since I first found it. My kids enjoy them made into 10 rolls and split them in half to use in their lunches with lunchmeat! I love toppibg them with butter when they come out of the oven and they don’t go stale too quickly either! The last several days and are still fresh.
Heather says
Love these so much and they are always a hit! Can I freeze them before baking but after the 1 hour rise? Then defrost and bake as directed?

I am wondering the same thing! Trying to prep for Thanksgiving!
