Slow Cooker Stew

You’re going to love this hearty beef stew made in the slow cooker. It’s as easy as dropping all the ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning and coming back hours later to have beef stew (with plenty of gravy!) waiting for you. And bonus, your house is going to smell amazing with this cooking in the kitchen all day!

How Long to Cook Beef Stew in Crock Pot?

Beef stew takes 5-6 hours on HIGH or 8-12 hours on LOW in the crock pot. Once a fork easily cuts into the beef, then it’s ready.

How to Make Beef Stew in Crock Pot

Chop up potatoes, carrots, onion and celery and set aside.

Place beef stew meat into the bottom of the crock-pot adding in flour, salt and pepper. Stir it around to fully coat the meat. There’s no need to mix this in a separate bowl or shake around in a bag, just mix it in the crock-pot for less dirty dishes.

Add in beef broth, chopped up vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic and spices.

Close the lid and cook until beef is tender. Serve and enjoy this delicious Crockpot Beef Stew!

Leftover Crockpot Beef Stew

You can keep leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can also freeze beef stew in freezer bags or freezer-safe containers for months. Beef Stew freezes really well so it makes a easy leftovers weeknight meal!

Recipe Help

Can I cook the beef before adding it into the slow cooker?

You sure can, although it adds a couple of minutes onto your prep time. Place flour, salt and pepper into a bowl, add the beef stew meat and stir to fully coat. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a frying pan, along with chopped onion, add the beef flour mixture and brown the meat on all sides, this takes about 10 minutes.

Now add it into the slow cooker and continue the recipe per directions.

Can I use dry onion soup mix?

Yes, these envelopes of dry onion soup mix are always handy to have in your kitchen! Instead of adding salt, pepper, paprika and a bay leaf – instead add 1 package of dry onion soup mix to the slow cooker.

What types of potatoes are best for beef stew?

You can use either chopped yellow potatoes, or baby red potatoes.

(Just realized you already included garlic in the recipe. 😉)
I don’t know if you might remember me. Several years ago I had a blog called My Yellow Farmhouse. Due to some health issues I haven’t been posting – or following wonderful people like you – but I want to Get Back to It!!

Perfect – I was thinking of inviting friends to dine here before we go to a play AND I was thinking a stew would be a great thing to serve. Talk about perfect timing!! (Think I’ll add some red wine & garlic to the crockpot.
I’ll let you know how that works out!! 😉😉
