Dairy Free No Milk Mashed Potatoes

It’s been 11 days without cheese or milk. 11 days. 11 days!

Cheese is something I love dearly (let’s be real), so suddenly saying goodbye to cheesy casseroles, mac and cheese, and pizza hasn’t been easy. But at the same time? It hasn’t been impossible.

Now, I’m learning to cook without cheese, milk, or butter — and surprisingly, butter has been the easiest swap. I already liked my I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter mashed potatoes, so the transition started there. Giving up milk, though? That’s been trickier. It’s in everything. But little by little, I’ve been figuring it out — and even finding some new favorites along the way, like these Dairy-Free Mini Pancake Muffins and No Milk No Eggs Pancakes, which are both total breakfast wins.

So when that mashed potato craving hit (because mashed potatoes = life), I knew I had to come up with something just as rich and creamy as my fluffiest version — without the dairy. And here they are: creamy garlic dairy-free mashed potatoes that are going to change your life. No seriously, just read the comments!

I’ve been experimenting with substitutions, figuring out what actually tastes good… and what definitely doesn’t. (Real talk: fake cheese will never be real cheese.) But with comforting favorites like these potatoes or a cozy bowl of my No Milk or Cheese Potato Soup, I’m proving to myself that dairy-free doesn’t mean flavor-free.

I can’t thank you enough for this recipe! I’m lactose intolerant, so any time I can find a dairy free option of a dish and it tastes amazing, I’m so excited. I was blown away at how good these were. Like, SO good. I’m going to start using this recipe for our Thanksgiving mashed potatoes! I was always under the assumption that butter and milk would have to be used for creamy potatoes – not anymore! 🙂

Vegan Mashed Potatoes

These mashed potatoes are  SO EASY to turn vegan!  Even though the recipe calls for chicken broth, you can substitute it with vegetable broth. And just like you have DELICIOUS Vegan Mashed Potatoes!

These mashed potatoes are creamy because we’re mashing them with broth  which is a great liquid to use as a substitution for milk.   Throwing in some garlic gives them a great taste and the smell is pretty delicious.  Bonus points on these potatoes:  You don’t have to peel them, who doesn’t love that?

So going dairy free, or just want a change in your regular mashed potatoes? Give these a try!

How to Make Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes

Bring potatoes to a boil. To peel or not to peel? That’s up to you, I prefer to leave the potatoes unpeeled, but if you want velvety smooth, peel them.

Keep boiling until a fork easily slides in, about 20 minutes.

Add chicken broth, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper to potatoes and mash. You can mash by hand or with a electric hand mixer. Just be careful if you’re using a hand mixer not to overmix.

Mix until creamy and serve. Enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store mashed potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When ready to heat, heat up in the microwave until fully warm. If they seem dry, add a splash of olive oil or broth and give them a mix to restore creaminess.

I hope going dairy-free isn’t too hard for you and makes you feel better! For a second I thought I might be lactose intolerant and I have to say I almost cried. There are a lot of good dairy-free options out there now though. I don’t know if your problem is the lactose or something else, but Lactaid milk is really good! Also, it lasts for a really really long time in the fridge. These taters look so yummy 🙂

Wow – what a huge life change! I went gluten free for a short time (health related) and it was really tough. It didn’t make a difference for me, so I was able to resume a normal diet. My heart goes out to you, friend! I know that can be tough! But you’re strong and smart and you can do this!
I never thought of using chicken stock! SO smart!! I can’t wait to try this – I’ve always got little bits of broth hanging around from leftover recipes!

That is hard cutting out the dairy! Especially if it might me a permanent thing. I’ve done it temporarily when I’ve needed to lose a few pounds, but I knew it would just be short-lived. These potatoes really do look creamy and delicious though so you can definitely do it!

My mother had to go dairy free and gluten-free because of health issues. She found it so much harder to give up dairy as opposed to gluten. Sure, she missed wheat but there are so many more quality and tasty alternatives yet it’s not the same with dairy. You have done well with this potato mash – it looks creamy! And good luck with your health issues xx

Having dietary restrictions can be tough, but the upside is that they make you more creative with the way you cook and eat.

These potatoes look wonderful! I bet you could even make them ‘cheesy’ with a little nutritional yeast sprinkled on top.

Oh! And, I wanted to share this with you…I am trying probiotics to see if they help. Also, taking any supplements that boost the immune system as well. My doctor thinks this all came down on me because my dentist prescribed a killer antibiotic (read: killed the good, gut flora, bacteria along with the bad) after dental work which I was severely allergic to but didn’t know until I took it. Just one capsule did the damage. (It’s called Clindamycin which can cause colitis due to the bacterium known as C. diff. So dangerous.) So, we must get that good gut flora back to repair our impaired immune systems. Wishing you lots of luck and sending warm hugs! xo

Oh, girrrrrrl! I feel your pain. Really, I do. Two summers ago, I had to go on a no dairy, no grain and no sugar (not even fruit, gasp!) diet to rid my body of a terrible infection. This infection gave me the worst acne ever and I never really suffered from acne before in my life. It was soul crushing! The diet was basically meat and veggies for 90 days. Just learned that it is the hormones (in pregger cows’ milk) that I am allergic to. I have been dairy free now this second time around for just a couple weeks, just like you. Hang in there…we can do this together! As Shashi said above, the benefits far outweigh the diet. But, to go without cheese? SO. HARD. Like you, I have made a pledge to offer more dairy free recipes on my blog. I look forward to sharing dairy free recipes with you and being a source of support! xoxo
