Dairy Free No Milk Mashed Potatoes

It’s been 11 days without cheese or milk. 11 days. 11 days!

Cheese is something I love dearly (let’s be real), so suddenly saying goodbye to cheesy casseroles, mac and cheese, and pizza hasn’t been easy. But at the same time? It hasn’t been impossible.

Now, I’m learning to cook without cheese, milk, or butter — and surprisingly, butter has been the easiest swap. I already liked my I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter mashed potatoes, so the transition started there. Giving up milk, though? That’s been trickier. It’s in everything. But little by little, I’ve been figuring it out — and even finding some new favorites along the way, like these Dairy-Free Mini Pancake Muffins and No Milk No Eggs Pancakes, which are both total breakfast wins.

So when that mashed potato craving hit (because mashed potatoes = life), I knew I had to come up with something just as rich and creamy as my fluffiest version — without the dairy. And here they are: creamy garlic dairy-free mashed potatoes that are going to change your life. No seriously, just read the comments!

I’ve been experimenting with substitutions, figuring out what actually tastes good… and what definitely doesn’t. (Real talk: fake cheese will never be real cheese.) But with comforting favorites like these potatoes or a cozy bowl of my No Milk or Cheese Potato Soup, I’m proving to myself that dairy-free doesn’t mean flavor-free.

I can’t thank you enough for this recipe! I’m lactose intolerant, so any time I can find a dairy free option of a dish and it tastes amazing, I’m so excited. I was blown away at how good these were. Like, SO good. I’m going to start using this recipe for our Thanksgiving mashed potatoes! I was always under the assumption that butter and milk would have to be used for creamy potatoes – not anymore! 🙂

Vegan Mashed Potatoes

These mashed potatoes are  SO EASY to turn vegan!  Even though the recipe calls for chicken broth, you can substitute it with vegetable broth. And just like you have DELICIOUS Vegan Mashed Potatoes!

These mashed potatoes are creamy because we’re mashing them with broth  which is a great liquid to use as a substitution for milk.   Throwing in some garlic gives them a great taste and the smell is pretty delicious.  Bonus points on these potatoes:  You don’t have to peel them, who doesn’t love that?

So going dairy free, or just want a change in your regular mashed potatoes? Give these a try!

How to Make Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes

Bring potatoes to a boil. To peel or not to peel? That’s up to you, I prefer to leave the potatoes unpeeled, but if you want velvety smooth, peel them.

Keep boiling until a fork easily slides in, about 20 minutes.

Add chicken broth, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper to potatoes and mash. You can mash by hand or with a electric hand mixer. Just be careful if you’re using a hand mixer not to overmix.

Mix until creamy and serve. Enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store mashed potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When ready to heat, heat up in the microwave until fully warm. If they seem dry, add a splash of olive oil or broth and give them a mix to restore creaminess.

I can’t believe you’ve managed to be dairy free over the holidays! I feel like I’ve been living off of cheese and crackers for the last week, lol! And I can’t believe these mashed potatoes are dairy free! They look insanely creamy and carby and yum… they are totally calling my name girl. Keep up the good work and I hope it helps with your health issues. 😉

I have been dairy free for over a decade now and I bake all the time. If you have any questions, send them my way. I love LOVE nutritional yeast for a cheesey (not the same, not ever, but cheesey nonetheless) Also, blended raw cashews with nutritional yeast and some other stuff is a great cheesy stand in. I have the Uncheese Cookbook which is great. GoDairyFree.com is an awesome resource also.

    GOOD LUCK!

I’m really interested to hear how this all turns out. I agree that there are so many ways to make things taste delicious without dairy. I love cheese and chocolate so those would be the hardest for me to eliminate completely. Good luck, Pamela! Can’t wait to see all of your dairy free recipes.

I feel your pain!! Not because you’re not eating dairy – because I AM eating dairy – but finding a good mashed potato can be tricky when a key ingredient is omitted! When I had my stint with vegetarianism, my aunt used to lose it on holidays because I wouldn’t let her put chicken stock in the potatoes! haha…. All of that rambling aside, chicken stock is a darn good alternative if you DO eat meat. Which I now do. And sometimes I add both: dairy and stock. Vegans would not be happy with me.

Perfect timing – I just found out how awful my “BMI” is…. and it’s shocked me enough to make some SERIOUS changes. I, too, have been having some health problems due to, I believe, poor eating habits… (Get that, a food blogger who doesn’t like to cook just for herself.) I’m going to ‘pin’ this recipe in my new board, which I’m calling “Good for You”.
Good luck with your non-dairy…. it’s gotta be soooo hard. I’ll let you know how I do with my new ‘eating healthy plan’!

These potatoes look sooooo good! I am dairy free and have been for two years now. My sons are both very sensitive to dairy, so it’s the right choice for us. I will say that the first month is soooooooooo hard! But it gets a lot easier. I LOVE so delicious brand ice cream, made from coconut milk. The chocolate peanut butter is amazing. Good luck to you!

Good for, you! I am lactose-intolerant so I eat lactose-free. But there is good unsweetened soy milk or unsweetened almond milk out there to use in these tasty looking mashed potatoes, so check them out.

My non dairy mashed potatoes had earth balance non dairy margarine and tofutti sour cream. Your potatoes besides being tasty are also very low fat, a real plus. Best of luck!

These potatoes look delicious! I was vegan for 7 months in 2012. Missed dairy the most. Vegan cheese is not the same as regular cheese, but sounds like you figured that out. I would usually just skip it all together and have pizza with tomato sauce and veggies, no cheese at all. I like it better that way : )
