HOMEMADE Ginger Ale Soda! This DIY simple syrup recipe is easy to make! Make your favorite flavor soda healthy with fresh ingredients and a sparkling water sodastream machine!

As a kid I drank too much soda.  As a adult in my early 20’s I continued on a Diet Coke, Cherry Cola path.  Then I took a shameful look in the mirror after finishing my 3rd can of Diet Coke and realized it wasn’t the soda that I loved, it was the carbonated water.   It was that fizzy water burn that I craved.

So instead of buying 2 liters of soda we bought 2 liters of seltzer water.    Most times it was plain, sometimes it was flavored.  The great part was that suddenly I was drinking a ton of water.  I lost a few pounds, the water made me feel better throughout the day.    I  didn’t miss the soda at all.

Homemade Ginger Ale

Homemade Seltzer Water!

We bought a SodaStream machine years ago.  It’s 100% a must have in the kitchen if you love bubbly seltzer water.  A few months ago I noticed that KitchenAid was selling a SodaStream Machine in colors aqua, black, cobalt, green, red, silver, orange and white.  What do I love more than great kitchen gadgets? Ones that are colorful and look pretty!  We got a aqua sky one, isn’t it a beauty?

Homemade Ginger Ale

I wanted to make a fresh ginger ale syrup with a few basic ingredients.  This tastes just like ginger ale soda but without all the bad stuff and calories!  If you love ginger ale you’re going to be a fan of this!

You will need star anise for this recipe, which is one of my favorite ingredients for Indian soups!  You can buy this from a Asian grocery or buy a entire box on Amazon that will last you forever.  You’ll also need some fresh mint.

The star of this drink is the ginger though.  It’s not overpowering, it’s just the right taste. Plus who doesn’t love the smell of fresh ginger?

I think there’s not enough ginger in this recipe… or maybe the fact that you’re only cooking it for 5 minutes. I use another recipe that uses more ginger, cooks in 2 cups of water for 45 minutes, then steeps for 20 minutes before straining. I find it produces a nice strong flavor.

Absolutely obsessed with ginger lately. And making my own soft drink would be preferred, controlling the sugar content etc. Loves it. Also love your pics. Very pretty!

We buy and drink so much ‘fizzy’ water. I should think about a sodastream! And making ginger ale is genius!!

We aren’t big soda drinkers, but the exceptions are the occasional ginger ale or root beer. I do enjoy the fizz and would definitely use a Soda Stream if I had one. I keep meaning to try making fermented ginger beer…

I LOVE your new Soda Stream! When mine wears out, I know what I’m getting. 🙂 I used to drink soda for the same reason and now I drink mostly fizzy water with a bit of lime in it. I’ve never thought to make a flavored syrup though. This sounds delicious! 🙂

I often drink what I call ‘fizzy water’ when I go out. I feel like I’m having a proper drink even though there’s no alcohol in it. So I get your addiction, Pamela!
What a beautiful-sounding drink this is … I love ginger!

I just discovered your blog today and what’s the first thing I see? A post about ginger ale, one of my ALL TIME favorite drinks. THANK YOU for this! We have a SodaStream too, and I am stoked about trying to make this. Question – do you think the star annise and allspice are critical here? Or do you think one of them could be left out? Just curious. Looking forward to reading more of your blog!!

Hey Nikki, nice to see you here! I think the spices definitely are going to help give it that ginger ale taste, but if you don’t have any – try without. The ginger syrup should still work out nicely!

We started drinking a lot of seltzer when we lived in the NYC area. Still do, although we always buy it in the store. I’ve wondered whether we should try one of those SodaStream makers — they sound pretty nifty. And the idea of making my own ginger ale is really exciting! I love it, but it’s hard to get a good commercial one. Fun post — thanks.

This homemade ginger ale sounds awesome. I am not a soda drinker but I do buy a spicy ginger soda from Trader Joes to mix with bourbon. I think this would be perfect in a mixed drink!

Oh, I want a Soda Stream SO badly. I hardly ever drink soda, though, so it would never pay for itself. I guess I’ll just keep buying seltzer…

We bought our Soda Stream for about the same reason — I was drinking soooo much club soda (and getting irrationally angry if the store was sold out!). when I bought it, I said that i was going to make my own soda syrups, which has happened with all of 1 flavor. This sounds like a tasty addition!
