Crockpot Bread Recipe

I haven’t been this excited to share a recipe in a long time — this Crockpot Bread is that good. It’s incredibly easy to make, deliciously addictive, and I’ve already made it twice this week (with no signs of stopping!).

The loaf comes out soft and fluffy on the inside, with a beautifully crusty top that makes each slice feel bakery-quality. It’s one of those game-changing recipes that feels almost too easy for how impressive it tastes — I can’t wait for you to try it!

I love how versatile slow cooker bread can be. Whether you’re trying this classic loaf, my Slow Cooker Whole Wheat Bread for a heartier option, or even going the tangy route with Sourdough Crockpot Bread, you’re going to be amazed by what your crockpot can do. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, try your hand at Slow Cooker Bagels — yes, you can make bagels in a crockpot too!

How to Bake Bread in the Crockpot

Pour warm water into a large bowl. Add sugar and mix until dissolved. Add dry yeast and stir. Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy. I always find it helps to sit it in a warm spot.

Add salt to bowl and stir to dissolve. Add vegetable oil. Add flour and mix with hands until everything is combined. Knead the dough for 5 minutes and form into a round ball.

Place dough in olive oil coated bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Sit in a warm spot for 30 minutes to rise, doubling in size.  Here’s a before and after so you can see how it rises.

Cut a piece of parchment paper that is the size of your slow cooker bottom and about 2 inches up the side.  It’s important that you go up the sides as your dough will expand (it’s turning into bread!) and you don’t want it to stick to the side of the slow cooker. Additionally, I like to spray the parchment paper with nonstick spray.  Place your dough into slow cooker.  I like to sprinkle rosemary on top too.

Cook on HIGH for 2 hours. Remove from slow cooker and brush a little bit of butter on top.

From there you can serve as is, or if you like more of a crusty bread, you can broil the top of the bread.  To do this, slightly butter the top of the bread and stick it in your oven under the broiler (or toaster oven on broil) for about 1 minute.  Watch your bread like a hawk while you broil as it can burn very quickly.  Mine usually takes about 1 minute.   Now look at this crusty top!

I love not only how easy this 2 Hour Slow Cooker Bread but also how it tastes.  It’s soft, moist and delicious!

I’ve really fallen in love with this bread recipe and it will be a weekly staple in my kitchen.   This afternoon Matthew was making lasagna for dinner and requested that I make this bread to go along with it.   Whenever you need some fresh bread, don’t stress out and take hours making it, try this recipe!

I hope you enjoy my Crockpot bread recipe!

Easy to make 2 HOUR Crockpot Bread recipe. Throw it in the crock pot and you will have soft homemade bread in 2 hours! This is the best bread to serve with creamy soups and casseroles.
By: Pamela Reed
Prep Time: 45 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours hours
serves 10

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • rosemary optional

Instructions

  • Pour warm water into a large bowl.  Add sugar and mix until dissolved.  Add dry yeast and stir.  Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.  I always find it helps to sit it in a warm spot.
  • Add salt to bowl and stir to dissolve.  Add vegetable oil.
  • Add flour and mix with hands until everything is combined.  Knead the dough for 5 minutes and form into a round ball.
  • Place dough in olive oil coated bowl and cover with plastic wrap.  Sit in a warm spot for 30 minutes to rise, doubling in size.
  • Cut a piece of parchment paper and place in bottom of slow cooker.  Make sure the parchment paper comes up the bottom of the sides of the slow cooker so when the bread expands it won’t stick to the sides.  Additionally, I like to spray the parchment paper with nonstick spray.
  • Place your dough into slow cooker.  Sprinkle with rosemary.
  • Cook on HIGH for 2 hours.
  • Remove from slow cooker and brush a little bit of butter on top.  Place under broiler for about 1 minute until slightly brown.  Keep a eye on it and make sure it does not burn!  Broiling is not a necessary step but I recommend it to get the top crispy!

Question re the amount of sugar. Is that the right amount? When I make bread, I only use 2 teaspoons of raw sugar.

My oven has been broken but since the new season of Great British Baking Show just did bread week, I was inspired to make some sort of bread. This was only my second time making bread and it turned out better than my oven attempt! I love this recipe and it was SO EASY to follow! Thank you for sharing this recipe!!! Any chance I could cut this recipe in half? I am the only one that eats bread in my family. If so, what changes do you think I would have to make? It sounds delicious.

Love that it is easy to make, no fail bread & and is baked in a crockpot. No fail bread for an airhead like me. Sliced a piece of bread, sat down to enjoy it & remembered I had set timer on phone & discovered I had taken out of pot 20 min. early. Nevertheless it was delicious. I did put loaf back in crockpot for remaining time. When I 1st took it out it seemed light in color & was wondering how you know it’s done other than going by time in recipe.

This was my first time making bread and I LOVE this recipe! It’s so easy and there’s no double rising/long wait which makes it perfect. I used bread flour but will try with all purpose next time I run out

This was so easy and so delicious! I used bread flour because that’s what I had on hand, and I actually just flipped it over and let it cook awhile longer to brown in the other side. Worked great! Sooo good!

Haven’t made it yet. I will over the next few days. The ingredients look like they will fit within a standard 2 quart crock pot but do you think they would fit in a 1 quart unit?

Hey Robert, I most often use a 6-quart slow cooker for this bread. I have tried a 4 quart and it turned out well, but I haven’t tried anything smaller.

I’ve baked a fair amount of bread-but this was the 1st time in a crockpot! Loved that it wasn’t time consuming. It’ll be fun to make with my granddaughter.
We all enjoyed it with our BBQ rib dinner, but thought it a bit sweet, so I’ll cut back on the sugar next time. Made good toast the next day! Thanks for a fun recipe!

I left a comment earlier that this recipe was flawed. Not enough liquid, etc. well, I went ahead and kneaded it up the best I could, put it on the parchment paper and into the crockpot. Left it for an hour and a half and then into a 350° oven for 10 minutes to crisp up the top. Holy cow, this is so good. I just wanted to come back and fix my earlier comment.

Thanks, Pam! One more question: What size crockpot do you use for this recipe? (I have a 3 quart, so if mine is smaller I would have to cut the recipe. And if I have to do that, would I also have to cut the cooking time, too?)

I would love to make this, but every crockpot I’ve ever had gathers so much moisture on the lid that when taken off it douses whatever is below in the pot with a bunch of water. How does one avoid soggy bread then? Any help or tips is appreciated. Thank you so much.

I don’t know if this helps but when I could rice in an old, basic cooker, I put paper towels on top before I put the lid on. The paper towels soak up the steam. It may work with the crock pot as well.
