Make-Ahead Freezer Salisbury Steak recipe that makes a comforting family dinner! This easy to make recipe uses Cream of Mushroom Soup and French Onion Soup to create a creamy gravy to pour on top of the steak patties. All you have to do is bake it and freeze it and it’ll be ready for weeknights when you don’t have time to cook. Serve alongside mashed potatoes and veggies for a full dinner. Sometimes life can get busy where you don’t have a hour to cook a home cooked meal. Instead of grabbing a boxed meal, or even worse ordering takeout, I love making homemade make-ahead freezer meals that I know will satisfy everyone at the dinner table on those busy weeknights. This Salisbury Steak recipe is one of our favorites and reminds me of the classic TV dinner that I used to love as a kid, but this is completely homemade.
When I find myself with some free time on the weekend, I’ll make 2 or 3 of these meals to put in the freezer so I can grab one when I just don’t have time to cook in the kitchen. The dish is so popular in my house that instead of groans that frozen meals can get, this one receives a big cheer (and even sometimes requested!). Whenever I make it I always serve with creamy mashed potatoes and a green veggie- either Brussels Sprouts or broccoli.
To make life easier and to save even more time, I am in love with shopping online for my groceries. More specifically my heart belongs to Peapod. After I got my latest Peapod delivery I put all my groceries away and then geared up to make this Salisbury Steak recipe. The ingredients are simple and the steaks are easy to put together. You’ll only need 1.5 pounds of ground beef for this recipe but the family size packs of ground beef are such a good deal at Peapod I usually get that and use the leftovers for more Salisbury Steak or individually freeze it in 1 pound bags for burgers, casseroles, etc.
This recipe uses Cream of Mushroom Soup and French Onion Soup – some of which you’ll add to the steak patties (seen below). The rest will be added in to make a creamy gravy to pour on top.
Once the patties are formed, add in to your casserole dish. For easy freezer meals I like to use EZ Foil pans (this one is “lasagna size”). You could also use a regular casserole dish, but keep in mind if you only have 1 or 2 casserole dishes and you freeze them, you might run into some trouble if you need a fresh dish for dinner one night and realize all yours are in the freezer. For this reason I like to keep a few foil pans on hand (plus they are easy cleanup – no dishes!).
Once the steaks are baking for 30 minutes you can start making your delicious gravy. Pour this on top once 30 minutes is up and bake for 10 more minutes.
After it’s done cooking I will let cool and then double wrap with aluminum foil on top. Then into the freezer it goes. Once ready to eat, thaw in refrigerator overnight. Remove foil on top and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
And just like that you have the easiest, most delicious Freezer Salisbury Steak!
Make sure to serve with mashed potatoes so you can add some creamy gravy on top of them too!

- 1 10.5 oz can Condensed French Onion Soup
- 1 10.5 oz can Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 egg - beaten
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablesspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup fresh mushrooms
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a medium sized bowl combine 1/4 cup of French Onion Soup, 1/4 cup of Cream of Mushroom Soup, ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Shape into 6 steak patties. Place in 13x9 casserole dish that has been sprayed with nonstick spray. Bake for 30 minutes.
- In a small bowl combine remaining soup, water, milk and mushrooms. Pour over steak patties. Bake for 10 more minutes.
- Let cool, label the container and cover the top with 2 layers of foil. Transfer to freezer.
- Once ready to eat, thaw in refrigerator overnight. Remove foil on top and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
- If you don't want to freeze this meal and instead want to serve immediately- you totally can. Just use the instructions above and don't freeze it.
