Sweet and savory red onion jam that’s ready to store in the refrigerator. Red onions are caramelized in a pot and then simmered with red wine vinegar and spices until it reaches a jam. You need to try this on your burger and with crackers! I also provide canning instructions if that’s your jam (get it? hah!).
Refrigerator Red Onion Jam
If you’re looking for a simple no fuss red onion jam – this is it! Red onions are chopped up, sautéed until caramelized and then they simmer on a low boil until it reaches a jam consistency.
I often make a couple batches of this sweet and savory jam with our garden onions, storing the jars in the refrigerator and using them up until they’re gone. It’s perfect for spreading on burgers or sandwiches and on crackers (especially with slices of cheese!).
One batch makes approximately a 12 ounce jar of onion jam. You can double or triple it to make more.

Ingredients for Onion Marmalade
- Red Onions, finely chopped
- Vegetable Oil
- White Sugar, you could also use a half white sugar, half brown sugar combo if you want a darker flavor (and color) jam.
- Seasonings: salt, pepper and garlic powder
- Red Wine Vinegar, you can also use balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar if you would like to.
How to Make Red Onion Jam
Saute the onions and vegetable oil in a large pot until softened.
Add in sugar, salt, pepper and garlic powder into the pot, stirring to fully coat the onions. They are going to start caramelize now, and you will start to smell them! This takes about 15 minutes.
Pour red wine vinegar into the pot and bring to a low boil. Stir every few minutes until it reaches a thick jam, this usually takes 25-35 minutes.
Allow jam to cool and then pour into a mason jar. Store in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks.
Can I Can This Jam?
Yes, you can easily can this jam. Process jam in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes in jars that are pre-sterilized. Sealed jars will keep in your pantry for 12 months.
How to Serve Onion Jam
You can serve onion marmalade a few different ways. Personally I think it’s best on crackers!
- On toasted slices of ciabatta or French bread.
- On salty crackers with slices of cheese or cream cheese.
- Add to burgers or melted ham, egg and cheese sandwiches.
- Serve next to grilled chicken or steak.

Red Onion Jam (Refrigerator Jam)
PrintIngredients
- 4 cups red onions finely chopped
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Pinch black pepper
- 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
Instructions
- Add onions and vegetable oil into a large pot, heating over medium heat. Sauté the onions, stirring often until onions are softened and translucent, about 10 minutes.
- Add in sugar, salt, garlic powder and black pepper into the pot, stirring to fully coat the onions. It might seem dry right now, but the onions are going to release liquid very quickly as they start to caramelize. Continue stirring until water dissolves, about 15 minutes.
- Pour red wine vinegar into the pot, stirring, and allow to simmer on a low boil until it thickens up into a jam. I like to stir it every couple minutes, this usually takes about 30 minutes to reach jam consistency.
- Allow to cool and then pour into a mason jar. Onion jam will last in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks.
