Homemade Wasabi Popcorn Recipe

Popcorn is one of my family’s favorite snacks. It doesn’t matter what time of the day it is – it’s always popcorn time. Popcorn is a staple for movie watching, but also perfect for a nighttime bed reading snack. I mean sure sometimes you’ll drop a couple pieces in bed, but don’t worry, you’ll find them eventually! 🙂

This Wasabi Popcorn is the perfect blend of spicy and buttery sweet, it reminds me of a savory kettle corn. It’s not overpowering with the wasabi, so you don’t have to worry about burning your tongue off while snacking on it.

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to make this popcorn.

  • popped popcorn
  • butter
  • soy sauce
  • wasabi
  • salt
  • sugar

How to Make Wasabi Popcorn

You’ll need 8 cups popped popcorn. I use an air popper to pop our popcorn which is the most healthy option. Not to mention, so easy! Place the popcorn in a large bowl (how cute are these popcorn bowls?).

Next mix your butter, soy sauce and wasabi in a small bowl. The soy sauce gives it a little extra savory taste. When the wasabi is completely dissolved, pour over the popcorn.

A little note on the wasabi: I use prepared wasabi in the tube, but if you can only find wasabi powder you can just add water and make your own.

Finally, sprinkle salt and sugar on top. The sugar makes it taste like a savory kettle corn. Now sit on the couch and eat it all! 🙂

How to Store Leftover Popcorn

If you have any leftover popcorn store in an airtight glass or plastic container in a cool place, like your kitchen cabinet. Eat within 1-2 days to prevent popcorn from going soggy.

First of all, I’ve found that oil by itself doesn’t develop wasabi’s bite, having tried adding wasabi powder to oil and shaking repeatedly over a few days. Apparently, like mustard powder, wasabi powder has to be activated by mixing with water or something watery like soy sauce. Fine.
But popcorn when wet gets SOGGY. So this looks like a recipe for soggy wasabi-soy popcorn, unless you are very sparing with the soy sauce, and even more careful about how you drizzle your oil-soy-wasabi mixture.
I’ve had wasabi flavored items that were dry and yet very wasabi-hot. But I don’t know how that’s achieved.

I had this concern too… anyone who’s tasted their wasabi paste before it’s sat long enough knows that it tastes HORRIBLE and not at all like the finished product does a few minutes later… curious as to how it develops the flavour in this recipe, guess I’ll have to give it a shot.
