It’s easy to make homemade white bread in the bread machine. This recipe makes a soft and fluffy loaf, perfect for sandwiches and toast!

White Bread Recipe for Bread Machine

What’s not to love about homemade bread? Especially when you cut into a warm, freshly baked loaf, slather on some butter, and watch it melt into every fluffy bite—OH LA LA, perfection!

Lately, I’ve been baking nonstop, experimenting with all kinds of recipes in my bread machine. One of my absolute favorites is Italian bread that comes out with a perfectly crisp crust and a soft, airy inside—ideal for sandwiches or dipping into olive oil. And when I’m craving something extra comforting, I whip up a batch of fluffy bread machine dinner rolls. They’re so light and buttery, they practically melt in your mouth!

If you love that rustic, chewy texture with big, beautiful air pockets, you have to try making ciabatta bread. It’s surprisingly easy to make at home, and the result is that bakery-style loaf you can’t stop tearing apart piece by piece. And lately, I’ve been obsessed with baking up a fragrant Italian herb bread, infused with basil and oregano. The smell alone is enough to make everyone in my house run to the kitchen before it’s even out of the machine!

But this recipe is dedicated to my most traditional, basic bread recipe. This recipe makes a fluffy loaf of homemade white bread in just a few hours using your bread machine. I hope you love it!

How to Make Soft White Bread

For this recipe you’ll need warm water, warm milk, all purpose flour, sugar, salt, melted butter and active dry yeast.   You’re going to be surprised that this isn’t made with bread flour considering how soft and yummy it ends up!

Add the ingredients into your bread machine baking pan depending on the order your bread machine manufacturer recommends. I listed them in the order that I add mine to the baking pan which is pretty standard, but please double check with your bread machine manual first!

Select WHITE bread on your bread machine and then press START.  Now sit back and let your bread machine do the work!  My bread machine takes about 3 hours to make a loaf of bread, from start to finish.

Now my favorite part, time to cut the first slice of bread! Look at how fluffy this bread is! This bread makes perfect sandwich bread, and delicious toast that I like to add strawberry jam and butter to for breakfast!

How to Store Homemade Bread

Store bread in a bread box, or wrapped up on the counter for 3-4 days. You can also freeze this bread for 4 months. I like to wrap in aluminum foil and then place in a freezer bag to prevent any freezer burn to the bread.

I made the 1 lb loaf for the first time using olive oil instead of butter, turned out great! Can l use whole wheat flour instead of all purpose? Do l simply increase 50% of the ingredients if making 1-1/2 lbs loaf?

I liked the look of this recipe over the one that came with the bread maker, however, I followed exactly and put ingredients in exactly in the same order, yet the bread sunk in the middle and is dense and gummy. The ingredients didn’t seem to mix well either. But the flavor is fantastic. Any suggestions as to how to fix the issues I mentioned. Grateful for any help.

I had to review this. I have made a lot of bread machine breads, but I made this yesterday and was knocked out at house, soft and tender and wonderful. It was as soon as it came out of the machine. I put butter all over it and the rest is history. This is a wonderful recipe. Thank you for sharing, I can’t wait to make it again this afternoon lol

I used the recipe in my book but it came out terrible because the conversions were wrong, then I tried a few recipes I found online and none of them came out right. This recipe came out perfect!!! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made a beautiful loaf with your recipe! Thank you so much!

I used bread flour and it turned out lots better than the one with all purpose flour instead of double the recipe I just made two loaves. I loved this recipe this is the one I’m always going to use. I found my bread machine at Thrift store it was 26 years old and never been used only give $5.00

Just made this but used bread flour. For some reason half of my loaf didn’t rise as well. I have probably made a mistake somewhere. Cannot wait until it has cooled down so I can get into it, SMELLS AMAZING!! Has anyone else done this as a 1 1/2 loaf and worked out the ratios of the measurements because I cannot get my brain to do the math for it HAHA!

It tastes amazing but my loaf didn’t rise well. I used rapid yeast. Should I use the normal kind?

Very good ! I doubled it and it was too big for my machine, which is weird because it can handle 2 pounds bread… What a mess !

Hey Susan, I don’t use a thermometer for an exact temperature, but I usually warm milk and water in the microwave (about 20-30 seconds), it should feel warm to the touch – it shouldn’t burn you. Hope this helps!
