We Grew Celery For The First Time!

By: Pamela Reed

Not only did we grow a baby for the first time this Summer but we also grew celery for the first time!  Garden high 5!
How to grow celery from seed in Zone 5A. Celery is a easy garden vegetable to grow during the Summer months!

We usually stick with our usual plants but this year we were feeling adventurous so we added celery to the garden mix!  For time reference the seedlings were transplanted to the garden on May 17 and then celery was picked in September!  We still have a few plants growing!

Even though celery has a reputation of being difficult, we found it to be a pretty no nonsense plant once the seedlings were in the ground. We did have some issues with our seeds in the beginning so I agree with others that celery germination isn’t easy!

Celery will be a permanent staple in the garden for years to come!  The celery we picked is so crisp and delicious! And the smell! I wish I could have you guys smell the celery because it smells AMAZING!

Have you ever grown celery?  Let me know in the comments if you grew anything new this year!

PS.  I’m super embarrassed by the amount of weeds you see in the photos above, but having a baby in the middle of garden season has you skipping garden chores! We’re going to have a lot of weeding to do in the Spring!  I can’t wait to put Enceladus to work!

Celery is one of my favorite veggies. I can only imagine how good it must be when you grow it yourself!

you’re very welcome 🙂 fresh is best, but dried is good too for the leaves, especially w/ leaves that look like that, dry them just like you would any other herb. 🙂

I always think of celery as something that is bought, not grown (I am terrible!). I am so inspired by this beautiful crunchy specimen!

That is beautiful! I would be so proud I’d hat to pull it up. I hope you enjoy every bit of it. I only grew zucchini and tomatoes this year. I would say you had very productive and exciting summer.

    Wishes for tasty dishes,
    Linda

That is some nice looking celery. This year I planted two things I never have – red cabbage and lemon cucumbers. I’m happy to say both turned out and were very tasty. Even the squirrels seem to like the cucumbers – every once in a while I would find one out on the lawn with a few bites taken out!!

I agree with Susan… I have grown all 3 myself: newborns, weeds & celery. Turns out I have a real knack for newborns & weeds. Celery not so much ?. And, I didn’t even start it from seed. Bought a 6-pack. This was when I lived in the blazing heat of southern Nevada. Don’t know if that was part of the problem or not. It was not a fun experience.

You’re funny…WHY are you embarrassed by your weeds? I’m impressed that you grew celery and have a newborn. Give yourself a break, little Mama.
