First Vegetables Planted On The Land!

By: Pamela Reed

Watch as we we plant onions, sugar snap peas, cabbage, lettuce, kale and more in the garden!  All plants started from seeds.  Follow along with our Upstate journey here!

This weekend was very exciting because we planted our very first plants up on the land!  If you want to follow along with when we plant, you can find it on the seed calendar.

We’re slowly adjusting to the new seed schedule for Zone 5A.  It feels like we’re planting late since we’re so used to NYC Zone 6B.  This is all going to be a learning experience to figure out when we should plant, probably with some heart break thrown in.    We looked at tens of charts to figure out when was best, and decided to take a chance and plant our more hardy plants that could survive the cold nights.

So on Saturday we planted sugar snap peas, onions, kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, collards and lettuce!

And before I go any further, here’s a time lapse of the first bed being prepared and the plants going in!  High 5! (I’m exhausted)

We had lots of plants to get planted in one day.  Right now there’s so much to do on the land so we tried to stay as focused as possible to get them all planted.   We were coming back to NYC after planting, so we knew we had to get them in the ground.

Here’s the plants, all grow from seed, under our DIY grow light stand.

We had a print out of our garden layout that we tried to stay true to.  Unfortunately there was only time to get 2 boxes prepared instead of 3, so we had to reorganize the plants a little bit.

Once the boxes were prepared (I’ll be doing a whole post on that soon), then it was time to plant.

First the onions…..!

Then the Sugar Snap Peas!

There’s 150 plants – oh my oh my!

Now on to the plants!

Lots of lettuce.  Arugula will be planted for Summer.

So much kale.

And Brussels Sprouts! If they grow I will be ecstatic!

Once everything was planted, we wanted to add hoops on to the boxes to protect them from the outside for the first week.   We always do this on the roof as it’s a bit of a shock to the plants with wind, sun, rain, etc.

After that, we added our tried and tested fabric to the hoops.  Now the plants are all protected and snuggled in.Watch as we we plant onions, sugar snap peas, cabbage, lettuce, kale and more in the garden! All plants started from seeds.

By the way, did you like your sneek peek at the fence? Yeah, it’s almost all done.  We just need to get it painted next!

What are you growing? Have you begun?  Let me know in the comments!

You are going to have such a bounty this summer, Pamela! Loved the quick video but it doesn’t do justice to how much work you’ve done ๐Ÿ™‚

You sure have accomplished a great deal in one weekend. Yes gardening in the Hudson Valley especially in the Catskills is quite different from Brooklyn, we have a much shorter growing season but I am sure you will be very successful. Love Mr. Turtle, hope he keeps away all the critters.

I am so impressed by everything you two have done on The Land. What a lot of work!! Your seedlings look so perfect – lots of great, deep roots without being root bound. It’s gonna be so much fun to see everything ‘coming along’.
I know I’ve mentioned this before… just think of me as an old auntie… I so very, very impressed with what you’ve done to keep out any deer but I’m hoping and praying you don’t have ‘critters’ like rabbits or groundhogs ’cause they’ll wiggle under joyfully.
That being said, when we had our farm the groundhogs stayed in the fields, where they were very happy eating soybean plants and corn… so they stayed out of my gardens. And we didn’t have any rabbits… probably due to coyotes. I hope you have the same luck!! ; o )

      Thanks Cecile, it meeans alot!
It’s hard to tell in the photos but there’s wire fencing under the fence as well (it looks invisible in the photos). Hopefully that will keep them out!

Sounds like a fun time! Great pictures. You’ll have fun experimenting with a new growing zone. Looking forward to seeing that fence completed — looks great so far!
