Good for You Triple Chocolate Brownies

Triple Chocolate Brownies that are kinda good for you since they’re made with applesauce and egg whites.  Enjoy this chocolate lovers recipe!

It wasn’t even a week ago I was showing you my red bean brownies (with sinful frosting), so are you surprised to see another brownie recipe up here?  Yeah, me neither.

This week I’ve been feeling the January blues.  Maybe it’s the constant chill on my cheeks when outside, maybe it’s the cold knee caps when waiting for the bus, maybe it’s the Winter comfort food binge, maybe it’s a long list of jobs that need to be completed (but instead I put on my pajamas and watch Amazon Prime videos while feeling guilty for not completing the jobs).   So what do I do but make another batch of brownies?   But this time I add sprinkles, but because sprinkles automatically equals a party, right?

Triple Chocolate Brownies that are kinda good for you since they're made with applesauce and egg whites. Enjoy this chocolate lovers recipe!

These Triple Chocolate Brownies are going to make for a better Winter time treat because there’s not that much guilt involved in them.  I’m using AllWhites Egg Whites which is 100% liquid egg whites with no yolk, fat-free, cholesterol-free and low-calorie egg product packed with essential nutrients and vitamins.   These can be found in your refrigerated dairy section and is a great source of protein to keep on hand (just this morning Matthew made a egg sandwich with them).  Instead of adding a bunch of oil I’m substituting most of it with applesauce.  This is going to cause those brownies to be fudgy and moist in the middle!

Have you been watching the news?  If you have tuned in during the last 24 hours I’m sure you’ve seen titles like:

WINTER STORM JUNO, a Historical Blizzard
NORTHEAST TO MEET  A GOLIATH
NYC to get 24 to 36 inches of snow, NYC to shut down, NYC ready to rumble with Juno
Blizzard Warning In Effect!
BREAD SOLD OUT, Incoming Blizzard!

I love snow.  I know not everyone likes it.  After all, you have to shovel, you might get cold, or the horrors you might run out of chocolate chips (blizzard advise 1: stock up on chocolate).   I’ve always lived in the Northeast so snowstorms have been a part of every Winter for me.   Does anyone else remember the Winter of 1993?  Me too, I loved it.   Since I was a kid there’s always been something magical and exciting about a expecting snowstorm.  While I was in school there was the anticipation of school closing.  If it was bad the night before, you’d turn on your local tv channel and scroll through the listings until they got to your school to see if it was closed (worst was you tuned into the channel and they were at the R schools when your school was a P, you’d have to wait a bit).   Maybe it snowed during the night, in that case you’d jump out of bed and do the same thing in the morning.  When you saw your school scroll across the screen with the words “CLOSED”.  You shouted “Yeah!”.  The rest of the day was filled with sledding, your dad making you throw rock salt out,  going sledding more, coming inside and your mom seeing your bright red skin and making you a hot chocolate, and then more sledding  On my hilly street the snow didn’t really go anywhere, so in big storms it stuck around for weeks, even months.    As a 31 year old, I’m still just as excited.   I love the anticipation of the storm (how many inches? how many feet? is it going to hit us?).  I love seeing the first flakes fall down followed by sitting near the window for hours watching NYC become a winter wonderland.   I love seeing kids sled on sidewalks.  I love throwing on cozy socks, flannel pajamas and drinking a hot cup of tea.

So what I’m saying is, I love you Juno.  I’m writing this post on Monday night, so I’m giddy with curiosity. Some forecasts are saying 12 inches, some are calling for 24 inches, some are saying 3 feet.  I say bring it on.  You beautiful white beast with snow falling and blowing.  Let it snow!

Haluski AKA Polish Cabbage and Noodles

HALUSKI aka POLISH CABBAGE AND NOODLES is a quick and easy recipe to make! This recipe is a authentic Polish recipe passed on to me by my Polish Grandmother! Your family is going to love this traditional bowl of noodles and cabbage for dinner!

During the 1800’s women in Europe had an average of six children during their lives, with many families having more than that.   Many of these families from Eastern Europe were poor and needed a simple and cheap dish that could feed the entire family (and keep them full).  One of their favorite dishes that Polish Grandmothers (babcia!) and Mothers made was haluski. HALUSKI aka POLISH CABBAGE AND NOODLES is a quick and easy recipe to make! This recipe is a authentic Polish recipe passed on to me by my Polish Grandmother! Your family is going to love this traditional bowl of noodles and cabbage for dinner!

Haluski is a dish that my mother would make as a kid very often. It’s no surprise that her mother came from Poland so this was a hand me down recipe.  The dish is essentially a easy noodles and cabbage dish that is made in about 15 minutes.  If you calculate the ingredients, you’ll see that it’s about a $5 meal and can serve 6-8 people.  This makes a very bargain friendly dish that is delicious too. Don’t you love that? Haluski is a popular Eastern European dish, especially in Poland, that is quick and easy to make. A big bowl of noodles and vegetables is sure to please your entire Family at dinnertime. Enjoy this delicious Haluski recipe passed on to me by my Polish grandmother!

The Little Jalapeno Plant That Could… Grow All Winter Long!

The Spring garden season has begun already, can you believe that? Seeds have been planted inside that will be transplanted in March. There’s broccoli, cauliflower, kale, onions, bok choy and collard greens planted so far. I’ll be doing a full post on planning soon, so keep a eye out on it!

But for this post, I wanted to celebrate a jalapeno plant. This special jalapeno plant grew all Summer long and somehow as of January 22, in the middle of Winter, it’s still producing jalapeno peppers every single week. How did we do it? Well we didn’t, the plant did it. How did we help it? Well that I an discuss….

Won’t You Be My Valentine? Join the February Tea Swap!

This weekend was a dreary one.  On Saturday we hopped all over Brooklyn and Manhattan visiting hobby shops and picking up acrylic in Chinatown.  The day was extra chilly so I was happy to finally sit down for a late lunch with a big bowl of Udon Noodles near Washington Square Park.  It was the perfect way to warm up my bones.  On Sunday, it was cloudy and rainy all day long.  It was one of those days where it feels like it’s morning all day long as the sun just won’t peek out.   So on Sunday afternoon I curled up with a nice cup of tea (ok, a couple cups) and decided you know what we all need during Winter?  Tea and love.  Welcome to the February Tea Swap “Won’t You Be My Valentine?”

Wont You Be My Valentine_ Join the February Tea Swap

It’s been a long time since we did our last tea swap here and I’m not really sure why. Each one was successful and caused smiles around the world.  Schedules were a little crazy here so I’m going to use that as a excuse but I’m happy to say they’re back!  If you have never joined a Brooklyn Farm Girl tea swap, let me know explain how it works.  You will sign up for the swap and receive a partner over email.  You and your partner will swap with each other.   There’s always a theme to a swap so you can have some fun with your swap package.  By the sending deadline, you will send your partner a collection of teas and whatever else the swap theme calls for.    In return, your partner will send you your package out.  Most likely you’ll both be smiling ear to ear and become friends.

Because it’s February, the month of hearts, the theme is “Won’t You Be My Valentine?”.  You will send your partner a collection of teas and a gift that fits this theme.  For teas, it’s up to you what you want to send but you can always ask your partner if they have a preference.  I ask that you send your partner at least 10 bags of tea, but I usually go wild and send them tea for a month.  For the theme gift, it’s up to you!  Maybe it’s a homemade cookie, maybe it’s a tea mug with hearts on it, maybe it’s a candle because you read on their Instagram account (hello Internet stalking) that they love the smell of peppermint.  Have fun!

FAQ:
How do I sign up?
You sign up here.

When is the deadline to sign up?
The deadline is January 31.

When is the deadline to send my tea swap out?
You should send your tea swap out by February 7.

How do I get my partner?
I will send out a email a few days after the sign up deadline has passed with a link to partners.

Do I swap with the same person who sends me a swap?
Yes, it’s 1:1.  You and your partner are paired up.

Is this only for USA?
No, it’s International but you will ONLY get a partner from the same country as you.  If you live in the USA, you will only get a partner from the USA.  If you live in Australia, you will only get a partner from Australia.  If you sign up and there is no match in your country, then you won’t receive a partner.

How much money do I need to spend?
There is no minimum or maximum price, but this is meant to be a simple swap, so don’t feel pressured to over perform.  The point is to cause a smile, that’s it.

How should I package my items to ship?
It’s always better to be safe than sorry.  If you’re sending a pastry, package it good so it stays fresh.  If you’re sending a mug,  really wrap it up to protect it.

Can I post on my blog or Instagram when I receive my tea swap package?
Yes! And hashtag it #bfgteaswap

If you have any other questions feel free to leave them in the comments and I will answer it there.

I hope you will be joining the swap

Chocolate Kidney Bean Brownies with Peanut Butter Frosting

DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE Brownies made with KIDNEY BEANS! This healthy easy recipe makes brownies with kidney beans instead of butter and oil! They are topped with the BEST peanut butter frosting! Easy to make them completely gluten free and vegan too!

If you had to ask me my favorite treat, it would be a 3 way tie.

First, there’s donuts.  What’s not to love about them?  They’re sweet, they have icing, they’re cute and circle shaped, they often have sprinkles.  I just love them.

Recently, I’m all about scones and clotted cream.  A nice big spoonful of cream.  There’s a shop nearby that has mixed berry scones and it’s out of this world.  It’s the best scone I ever had.  I hope Matthew is reading this and understands this means I want a date to the scone place.  As soon as possible.  Thanks  babe.

Third, there’s brownies. Just say the word “Brownie”.  Don’t you feel better?  It doesn’t matter if they are homemade brownies, bought in a shop, or made from a box.  I’ll say yes to any brownie.  My favorite brownies are moist and fudgy when you bite into them.  There’s always a thick layer of frosting on top, to the point that it makes up 1/2 of the brownie.   I need a brownie right now.

Did someone ask for a brownie? Ok, I did.  Say hello to these Sorta Healthy Red Bean Brownies with Sinful Peanut Butter Frosting.

I like to call them sorta healthy because they are made with red beans (I love creating desserts with beans!).  Instead of butter and a lot of oil, the red beans take care of that and make the brownies moist.  I’m not calling them healthy because let’s be honest, if you want a brownie, you’re probably not going for healthy. In fact I’d say you have one goal: eat a brownie, make sure it’s delicious.

The Peanut Butter Frosting is sinful.  The dictionary tells me that sinful means wicked;  extremely enjoyable in a way that makes you feel guilty.  And that’s pretty much this frosting.  I made a tweet a few nights ago exclaiming that I couldn’t stop eating frosting. This was that frosting.  It’s delicious. It will change your life.  You will want to clean the bowl.  You will clean the bowl.

Pamela’s Life: A Picture A Day, December

How was your weekend everyone?
Mine was brrrr cold.  I tried to start running but then I realized that 10 degrees and running doesn’t work work well for me.  So instead of running, I’ve started to listen to the Serial podcast, watching episode of the Good Wife, drinking tea and eating soup. That sounds like Winter, right?

When I used to have my old blog (12 years ago!) I would often document my months and days by posting photos. For months, it’d be a photo a day.  For days, it’d be a photo every hour. I won’t show you any of those blog series because they are (very!) embarassing but I thought about bringing them to Brooklyn Farm Girl. Since I take so many pictures (Instagram-aholic) I thought it would be fun to start doing monthly series.

I hope these are fun to view and you get to know me a little bit better with a glimpse behind the scenes with working on blog posts, creating our art for clients and life in NYC.  One thing I should tell you right away… I like cats. 🙂

Enjoy!

Staying in Luxury in Cleveland @ Metropolitan at The 9

Looking to stay in comfort when visiting Cleveland?  Look no further, you have to check out Metropolitan at The 9!

Metropolitan is a boutique hotel located in Downtown Cleveland that will dazzle you with it’s style and amenities.   How much did we love it? As soon as we got back to NYC, we went and bought the same bed that the hotel had.  We loved it that much.

The hotel has 10 floors of rooms (91 rooms , 65 suites)  that are each decorated with a colorful modern twist.   As soon as you can walk into your room you can tell it was curated carefully to make sure everything was just right.

So why don’t we walk into our room?

The bed is king size with a plush pillow top.  I can’t express how comfortable it is. I mean I can because I told you already that we bought this bed when arriving home.  The first night here we were supposed to wake up early but instead we just snoozed our hearts out.   A wow moment was spotting there were plentiful media connections wired next to the bed.  We always pack HDMI and numerous other cables and adapter dongles when we stay at hotels so that we can share our laptop screens to the televisions so this was a really nice surprise after dealing with most hotels that are stuck in the dark ages.

Some people like to say “Taco Tuesday” but I like to say “Tacos Everyday!”.

Tacos are one of my favorite meals, I can basically eat them every night and never get sick of them.  The thing I love about tacos is you can have them so many ways.  Maybe you’re in a burrito mood, maybe you’re in a hard shell mood, maybe you’re in a salad moon, maybe you’re in a soup mood, maybe you’re in a pepper steak mood, or maybe you want a casserole.  In the case of the casserole, I got you covered.

Say hello to your new favorite dinner, Cheesy Taco Casserole!

New Bed, New Closet, New Year!

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Newell Rubbermaid, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #HomeFreeLowes http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

2015, I’m coming for you!   I’ve already checked off a few things off my list.  I know it’s January 5 and it will slow down, but I’m so happy 2 big things are out of the way… new bed and new closet! WOOOOH!

THE BED
We needed a new bed.  It’s not that our bed was bad, but it just wasn’t right for us.  We bought it a few years ago without Matthew even testing it out.  It did it’s job for a few years but then we both started to get lower back pain.  We needed something more comfy and we needed something larger.  I know you’re thinking we’re only 2 people, yes but we’re 2 people and 4 cats, do you how much room that takes up?  I mean have you seen a cat sleep? Each of them spread out to 5 feet long.

In November we went on a trip to Cleveland and we stayed at a beautiful hotel (review coming soon) that had the most comfortable bed.  The first night we slept in for hours!  After a few days Matthew’s back pain started to go away.  So we did what we had to do, we stripped the sheets off down to the mattress and wrote down the model.  One day back in NYC, we made our way to the mattress store and found the bed and bought it.

So there we were, with the most comfortable king size mattress, but no bed frame.

We looked online for bed frames and it seemed like everything we loved was thousands of dollars.  I wanted something big and light colored. Our room is rather dark so this would be the perfect opportunity to lighten it up.  But again, the prices – ugh!  So then Matthew said “I’m going to make us a bed”.  I trust Matthew, he’s built our farmhouse table, all of our storage, walls and as a kid he would build houses with his dad.  Even though still slightly worried I gave him the green light.   I don’t know how he did it, but he built, painted and transported this bed from studio to home in 4 days.    I nearly cried (ok maybe I did) when I first saw it in our bedroom.  It’s the nicest piece of furniture I’ve ever owned before!

Winter Fashion 2015 – Staying Warm In The City!

It’s 2015 you guys and we’re ready to start the year, but we need to look fashionable while doing it, right?  Of course!
No matter if you’re running errands in the city, going on a date night or planting seeds in the garden, I always feel that fashion adds confidence, so I love playing around with it.  Below are some of my favorite Winter 2015 fashion pieces, perfect for staying warm!

Winter Coats
Probably the most important piece for your Winter closet is a good Winter Coat.   First, the coat needs to be warm and protect you from the elements.  Second, the coat needs to be warm… oh did I mention that already? It’s important for NYC Winters!  Third, it needs to look good! Coats come in all lengths, all materials and all colors so I wanted to give a good variety.

 The Sporty Everyday Look
The North Face perfects the combination of comfort, warmth and style.   I wear my North Face for everyday wear to work, to the grocery store, to the garden and almost everything in between.   I love my Thermoball Parka because it’s the perfect length. Short coats don’t keep me warm enough in the Winter, so the extra coverage is important.  Besides that, it has a hood (must have) and comes in my favorite Winter color – black.  Is it warm? You betcha! Thermoball synthetic insulation has the warmth equivalent of 600-fill down.  It’s incredibly lightweight but yet retains the heat, meaning it’s my favorite coat in the Winter! And for social media lovers, it has a internal media pocket, perfect for slipping your phone in.
