Do you remember when we went to Disney World for my birthday in October? Yes, it was great!
We went to Disney a few years ago and we did the automated tour through their greenhouse. It was fun, but I wanted to get personal with the plants. Not only did I want to see all the vegetables up close but I also wanted to learn about their hydroponics system. When I got home that year I found out they have a behind the scenes tour of their greenhouse so I was sure that on our next visit we scheduled this tour in.
Was it amazing? Yes.
Should you check it out when you’re in Disney? Yes!
If you love to garden or cook you will love Disney World’s Behind The Seeds Greenhouse tour.
The tour takes place at Epcot and runs pretty much once an hour from 10AM-5PM. The price is $20 for adults. You can make reservations ahead of time, but we just stopped by and signed in and then came back at our time. Our group was only 8 people so although this tour is amazing it doesn’t seem to get that busy.
You’ll meet your guide at the time you made your reservation for and will be whisked backstage from a back door. Then you’ll walk through a few more doors and end up directly in the greenhouse. Your guide will be one of the employees of the greenhouse who is knowledgeable about hydroponics and can ask answer (almost) all of your questions. Our guide was Ashley who was great.
And then you’re off on an amazing adventure through their hydroponic garden. The entire greenhouse is inspiring and when you see how quickly the vegetables grow (and to what size) your jaw will be hanging on the floor.
Do you see by the date how quick this grew? Crazy.
Are you ready for their tomato plants? Are you ready for the size of their vines?
Here’s their secret nutrient recipe they use. Not so secret because they put it on a sign and I took a picture of it.
I was really amazed by their vertical systems, some static and some that move throughout the greenhouse. This gave us some ideas for a new wall garden in our home.
I forgot what this is called but this is a plant that closes itself when touched. This protects it from attacks.
I touched the leaf in the middle and it closed up.
When shaken so everything is touched, it closes up completely. In a few minutes it will bounce back completely.
This little girl learned about how friendly lady bugs are to the garden.
You’ll also walk through a pit (ok you won’t walk through the pit, but next to it) of gators. This is a alligator farm.
I like how they rest on each other, they have a good idea.
At the end we got to try some fresh cucumbers. I wish we got a pineapple to take home, but maybe next time. 😉
Hope you liked the tour of Disney World’s Behind The Seeds Greenhouse. If you visit, make sure to check it out!

This is freakin AWESOME Pamela! Not sure I will be hitting up Disney anytime soon, but will absolutely make sure I do this tour when I do. I am surprised that this is even something that Disney does, wish this freshness featured more heavily on theme park menus…. although I dont spose peeps visit theme parks for healthy tukka huh.

No offense but I’d rather eat whatever is growing here than what they serve at the Disney restaurants 😛

Cassie,
They use the food grown in that greenhouse all throughout EPCOT.

This is so cool!!! I love the tea garden the best, I would have a tea garden if I could even grasp herbs. but I can’t. Think you’re gonna have to send over some of your green fingered magic.

Amazing tour, Pamela! I imagine that you wish that you could recreate the entire Disney World’s Behind The Seeds Greenhouse on your Brooklyn rooftop! I think we all need a hydroponic garden like Disney’s. 😉 Thank you for sharing!

I love Disney World! The place just makes me smile. I did get to see some of the greenhouse from another tour we were one but it would be great to take the ‘real’ tour. Can’t wait for gardening season!
