My Baby Only Takes 45 Minute Naps

Posted:8/27/18

Support and laughter for parents who have babies and toddlers that only take short naps. This is a first hand experience on how I dealt with it.

Hello Sleeping Baby.

Or maybe I should say close to sleeping baby, because first you need your bottle of milk.  Milk always makes you tired.

Sometimes milk will make you fall asleep.  But usually, even though you’re exhausted,  you will fight me for every single nap.

My Baby Only Takes 45 Minute Naps

Ok, now you’re asleep.  It’s time for Mom to work. I will do some house work. I will answer some work emails. I will treat myself to a hot lunch in the kitchen.

Google tells me that newborns are supposed to sleep 18 hours a day.
Google tells me that toddlers are supposed to take 3 hour naps.
That means that you, 13 months old, will take a long, luxurious nap.  Right?

Wait.  That’s not right.
You’ve never taken a 3 hour nap.
When you were a newborn, you slept 10 hours a day when you weren’t crying from colic, not 18 hours.
Why are they lying to me?

45 minute naps have always been your thing.

Why do you only take 45 minute naps my sweet sleeping baby?
Is it because you have a fear of missing out?
Do you not like sleeping?
Please listen to Mama, sleeping is great.  Mama misses it so very much.

Ok, you’re stirring now.
I didn’t have time to eat a hot lunch or answer work emails.
Your 45 minute nap is up.  You will be powered up again.  I have to make a quick cup of coffee to keep up.

I love you my baby that only takes 45 minute naps.

I love your energy.  I love your spirit.  I love that you play hard.  I really do love you and your wild personality.

But I’d still love if you took a 3 hour nap.

Support for Parents Who Want Longer Naps

Virtual hugs and understanding to all the parents out there with little ones that only nap for 45 minutes.  We’re a rare breed, but we exist, and we’re tired.

I’m sorry I don’t have any solutions, because honestly, I don’t think there is a solution.  We have high energy children who don’t want to miss out on anything.   After many talks with our pediatrician, we’ve come to the conclusion that she’s a cat napper and this is how it will be.  We’re at 13 months now, and nothing has changed, so our guess is that this will continue.

I can’t wait until she’s a teenager who sleeps in until 3PM.

Lots of love,
Pamela, I’m Tired Too

PS.

Do you love the colorful “Happy Party” rug that Enceladus is sleeping on?

So many of you have been asking me about this rug!  It’s a rug from the collaboration between Lorena Canals and Oh Joy!  I love Lorena Canals rugs because they are machine-washable! Yes, you can throw the entire rug in your washing machine! Brilliant!

If you have a toddler, you know how important this is, because those little people are MESSY!

Oh Joy brings her signature colorful fun designs into the collaboration, producing 6 different styles of rugs for the Happy Rug Collection!
