Childhood Summers at the Jersey Shore

Posted:4/16/14
Updated:4/25/18

Every single summer until I moved away to college we celebrated our family vacation in Wildwood, NJ.  If you’ve been to Wildwood then you know how great it is, and if you haven’t, let me just tell you – it’s a fun place.

I have so many memories from these summer vacations including when my parents let me first go the boardwalk alone during the afternoon and I spent all my summer vacation money I saved up on getting my hair braided in colorful string, to waking up early to find seashells on the beach to hiding summer romances from my parents.    Whenever I think of Wildwood, NJ I think of good times.

Look at how stylish I was as a kid.

New Jersey was hit hard during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.  I remember seeing so many awful photos of the piers and boardwalks where I spent so many nights as a kid totally destroyed.  A year and a half later though New Jersey is “Stronger than the Storm” and the Jersey Shore is Going Strong making progress in rebuilding with their community.

If you haven’t been to the Jersey shore I think it would be a amazing weekend getaway from the city.  The boardwalks are full of quirky shops, delicious foods (funnel cakes and caramel apples!) and so many adventure seeking things to do. We often took a boat out that jetted across the Atlantic Ocean while stopping to look lovingly at dolphins.  I loved these adventures so much!  I always talk to Matthew about taking him to the Jersey shore so he can experience it.  I wonder how the Marlane Motel, the Shamrock Café and the Haunted Castle Boat Ride are doing, those were my favorite places as a kid.  There is always so much going on along the 130 miles of the Jersey Shore – festivals, concerts and plenty of foodie events!e

Other things to enjoy in New Jersey:

Family fun – aquariums, zoos, museums, science centers, national parks, amusement parks and more!

Remember I went to Medieval Times a few weeks ago?

Or how about a fun trip to Six Flags? We go on summer trips with plenty of friends.  What makes a trip to Six Flags even better: fanny packs and neon shirts!

Outdoor Adventure:  Hikes, Waterways and plenty of coastline.

Arts – Theater, Performing Arts, Concerts and top notch culinary delights.

Shopping – Designer to discount, trendy to quirky, there’s shops, outlet malls and plenty of flea markets!

Columbus, New Jersey has my favorite flea market that I can’t wait to visit this Spring! Here’s a past post about a trip there.  I found this dish there once for $2, what a life hightlight:

Have you ever visited the Jersey Shore? Tell me about in the comments!

Looks like a fun time! We only went into New Jersey for a day when we spent 2 weeks in New York years ago, looks like there’s a lot more to see and do then what we saw.
