Making Birthday Boxes for Kids Who Need Them

I think it’s fitting that before Thanksgiving this is a post saying thanks and helping out others. I found out about the Birthday Gift Project from looking on the Create the Good website.  The website allows you to enter your zip code and gives you ways to give back to your Community from searching in your area, in your state or doing work from home. Honestly, I haven’t done much charity work in person.  It makes me feel like an awful person. I always look at those people who volunteer 2 times a week with such envy.  I’ve always wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter but I know deep down inside I wouldn’t be strong enough. Maybe you can handle that, or maybe you’re good at talking to seniors, or maybe you’d do great at a phone bank for getting food donations, or maybe you’d be great at helping make a kid smile at a distance or providing a school a new dictionary.

The Birthday Giving Project is designed to give kids a birthday party that their families might not be able to afford. These boxes go to children in need, including a large amount going to kids in battered women shelters. The idea is to put in the box party supplies for them to celebrate a small party as well as a little gift to make them smile. Then you wrap it up and send it to the Charity who forwards it to the kid who has a birthday soon. You will help these families by providing a small “party in a box” for a child in need and at the same time gives children with “more” the opportunity to learn empathy in a concrete way by helping another child.

As soon as I heard about this opportunity I went out on the same day and got my box supplies ready. I mixed and matched the party supplies to try to make it as colorful and festive as possible.  A little goes a long way here and everything counts.  If you can only buy $10 worth the supplies, that’s totally amazing and you’re awesome.  If you can buy $25 worth of supplies and gifts, you’re equally amazing.

Now time to get the birthday box together!

Celebrating Thanksgiving With The Chew

Thanksgiving is just a few days away… are you excited?  Are you prepared?  Do you have the menu ready to go? So many questions, I know. The holidays are fun but sometimes stressful so I hope this recipe filled Holiday post will help you with some last minute decisions.

Christmas Dreaming with a Modern Kitchen and Decorations

I know it’s only the second week of November, but Christmas is in the air.  I went into a store yesterday and they had a life size Santa Claus dancing to a beat.  Ok first of all, I have no idea how tall Santa would be to be life size but I would imagine he’s “average”.  Also the dancing Santa was a bit creepy, especially because his eyes followed you.  But that’s besides the point.  I’m really excited for the holidays and I can’t wait to start decorating, so enter the planning phase.

I’ve given you peeks into our home here and here.  We live in a loft with 12 foot ceilings and a wide open living area.  When it’s Christmas we get a giant tree (that always is a adventure getting it out of here) and decorate our hearts out.  We love color, we love kitsch but we also love modern  lines.   That’s why when it comes to decorating I like to do a mixture to bring the worlds of smiling snowmen and sleek trees and lighting together.

Here’s our home sweet home.

I love our home, but my dream list is a bath tub (I know – 10 years without one!) and a updated kitchen.  Have you seen GE Café™ Series?  Gosh, I want all of their appliances!  Looking at them just makes me cry with jealousy and happiness.  Maybe Santa will read this and know I’ve been a very good girl for Christmas.  Can we take a minute and marvel at how great these would look in our place? Imagine the sweet smell of cookies and savory casseroles that I could make with these.

P.F. Chang’s General Chang’s Chicken

I love Chinese food.  I mean can you tell by my recipe category here?  For the past few weeks I was craving Chinese food so we finally stopped by one of my favorite restaurants and ordered the usual.  It was delicious, I was satisfied, but who wants to leave home when it’s cold out and who wants to pay $22 for take out?  Not me.

Matthew’s favorite Chinese item on the menu is always General’s Chicken.  Actually it’s what he ordered this weekend.  We have a couple busy weeks ahead of us with work that we’ll be staying at the studio until the later hours of the night so I need to come up some simple recipe solutions that will have us fed within 15 minutes of getting home (after we feed the cats of course, they always eat first, spoiled critters).

Let me introduce you to your new favorite weeknight dinner to save you the hassle of cooking from scratch, P.F. Chang’s Home Menu.  Their meal options include bold exciting flavors with quality cuts of beef, white meat chicken breast or succulent shrimp paired with crisp colorful vegetables, tender noodles, etc along with their  signature sauce.  Matthew’s able to get his chicken in while I can enjoy my vegetable mini egg rolls. It’s a win win situation!  Why don’t you shake things up a bit for Wok Wednesday?

What I LOVE: Fragrant Jewels Candles

In the What I LOVE series, I’m sharing current things that I love.  Maybe it’s cats, maybe it’s a new restaurant, maybe it’s a new cookie, maybe it’s… anything!

There’s just something about chilly weather that makes me love candles. Maybe it’s the comforting smells of pumpkin, cookies and trees, or maybe it’s the natural warmth I feel from the flickering flame, either way, I’m into candles right now.    Because we’re all thinking about the holidays (it’s almost 2 months away!) I wanted to show you a new candle that I found that not only am I loving but I’m also buying for all my candle loving ladies in my family. Why? Because they’re a unique candle… they offer a prize!

But first, let me show you the candles I’m loving right now.   Just a side note, how awesome is it they come wrapped so nicely in the mail?  I don’t live near family so this is a bonus as I can get it shipped directly to them without me having to pay postage twice.

Right now Pumpkin Patch is burning on my table, but I love the smoky woods smell of Campfire too.   I’m not a big flower fragrance person so I love a company like Fragrant Jewels that have more variety.    I also love Freshly Baked scent because I like to pretend I’m baking donuts all the time, without eating the thousands of calories that would cause me.

Must Have Halloween Decorations

Halloween is near! Are you excited? I am! Yup, it’s time to dress in all black with your Halloween socks and bags! Its always Halloween in my heart! #halloween

Right now we’re in the process of getting all the Halloween decorations out of storage and start to put them up around the house.  Right now I have a great spooky face on our front door, ghost lights hung by the window (that Goblin wants to knock down so bad), Caution! tape up on the walls and a spooky ghost that sits on the floor (that Goblin wants to knock down so bad). Don’t you love these giant googly eyes I found? IMG_20151008_115447 Read More

Viva® Vantage® Blog Party in NYC!

Last week I had a fun time hanging out with other NYC bloggers at the Viva® Vantage® party.  There was plenty of great food, wine glasses filled at 10AM, decorating stations to paint your own glass and lots of helpful hints on what you can use Viva® Towels for besides just wiping my sloppy mouth with (hey, it happens).

Here’s a quick video I made at the party!

I’ve been a Viva®  fan for years, honestly it’s the only paper towel I use, and I am totally not lying.   It feels like a cloth and it’s super durable without having to use a few sheets, so I was excited to try the new Viva® Towels.  We’ve become such fanatic Viva®  fans that if I have to buy a different brand because they’re out Matthew is always like “Oh man, you didn’t get Viva® !”.  Everyone notices in the house.

Show Someone You Love Them With a Unicorn

I know, what a title right? Show someone you love them…. with a unicorn! So grab your unicorn (they’re easy to find) and let’s get loving.

The truth is I love Matthew. Kissy faces and “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd. Stop it you guys.  So when I heard about CloudPets™ that allow you to give someone a stuffed animal that sends voice messages to them and for them to return them back to you, I knew I had to surprise Matthew with one.  What says I love you more than hearing my voice every morning with a new surprise?

Watch below for how it works.  When there’s a new message the heart blinks red. Then you press it’s hand and the message is heard!

What I LOVE: Jif Peanut Butter Bars

You guys know I love peanut butter.  A few days ago I posted some peanut butter on Instagram and exclaimed I was going to married it.  I’m not sure if I can, but if not, I think it’s time we get to that point.  I mean why not? Peanut butter is always there for you, it has silky smooth skin and it’s there to comfort you being held in a spoon at 4AM in the morning. Oh peanut butter, you glorious thing. But things just got better.  Before it might have been weird if you pulled out your jar of Jif peanut butter on the subway and got down, but now you can have it in bar form with Jif Bars.  You guys, I love these so much I made them a Friday “What I love” post because they’re that special.

I love a on the go snack as often in NYC I’m on the go and need that energy to get to point A to point G.  Jif Peanut Butter Granola bars a combo of my loved Jif Peanut Butter with chewy granola.  They come in 3 flavors to make everyone happy, I say eat all 3, but that’s because I mean peanut butter business.  There’s Creamy Peanut Butter, Crunchy Peanut Butter and Peanut Butter Chocolate.  Favorite? Them all! Ok, extreme favorite? Peanut Butter Chocolate because PB+C=4ever.  The bars have 7-8g of protein in each bar which is great to keep your energy up.

And because you guys are my boos I’m giving away some of these yummy treats at the end of the post. And now let’s get energized.  I want to show you 2 days this week where I hung out with my Jif bars, also known as my future husband.

Waiting for the G train subway, sweaty and hot but enjoyable with peanut butter. Jif

Monday – Friday Breakfast Schedule – What do you eat?

I don’t really like to get out of bed when my alarm goes off.  For one it’s still Summer and the air conditioner is on and I don’t feel like braving 90 degrees today.  For another, I’m tired and I want to sleep in 2 more hours. And most importantly I’m usually surrounded by my cuddle bears who try to lure me back to sleep with their soft purrs and gentle paw taps.  Xanadu is like “Come back to me Mom..”

Traveling Emergency First Aid Kit – How to Make Your Own!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #HealthySavings #CollectiveBias

How do you feel about traveling?  I love exploring new places, meeting new cultures and enjoying all the new foods.  I also feel that traveling is extremely exhausting.  I think it’s the whole process of getting there and getting home is what wears me out.  Who likes waiting in airport security lines for them to check your hair bun?  And who likes hearing their plane is going to be 4 hours late?   Also, I’m a homebody.  I love my own bed, my own tea cup, my daily routine and especially our cats.  I miss those critters so bad while I’m away, I can’t wait to walk through the door and pick them all up in big hugs.

When traveling you need to be prepared.  When we went to the Middle East earlier this year there were certain things that we couldn’t bring into the country and there were some things I forgot to pack that we definitely weren’t able to buy there.  I really don’t like to waste money on a new bottle of aspirin when a sudden travel headache comes up when I know I have a brand new bottle at home waiting for me in the medicine cabinet.  That’s why I always travel with a first aid kit.  It has the basics of what you need when away from home, in case you have a headache, get a cut or need some energy when you get 2 hours sleep.

Ever feel like this? This was in Berlin when we landed and got to the hotel.  Yawns.  Even worse, the bed was super comfy which meant we never wanted to get up.

Cozy in California

I’m sorta obsessed with socks.  I have a giant drawer full of them that I can’t really close.  If you open it up, you’ll see a rainbow of patterns and colors, and every holiday possible in sock form.  For Christmas, I’m guaranteed to get at least 3 pair of cat socks, so you can imagine I’m always equipped with cats under my shoes.  I treat socks a a luxury item so I try to buy the best.  From buying handmade wool socks on Etsy to buying the softest socks in the store, I always need comfy and Ultra Soft, Oh. So. Soft.

Pamela’s Life: A Picture A Day, December

How was your weekend everyone?
Mine was brrrr cold.  I tried to start running but then I realized that 10 degrees and running doesn’t work work well for me.  So instead of running, I’ve started to listen to the Serial podcast, watching episode of the Good Wife, drinking tea and eating soup. That sounds like Winter, right?

When I used to have my old blog (12 years ago!) I would often document my months and days by posting photos. For months, it’d be a photo a day.  For days, it’d be a photo every hour. I won’t show you any of those blog series because they are (very!) embarassing but I thought about bringing them to Brooklyn Farm Girl. Since I take so many pictures (Instagram-aholic) I thought it would be fun to start doing monthly series.

I hope these are fun to view and you get to know me a little bit better with a glimpse behind the scenes with working on blog posts, creating our art for clients and life in NYC.  One thing I should tell you right away… I like cats. 🙂

Enjoy!

What’s Your Wish? Here’s Mine! #WishesDelivered

I have lots of holiday wishes for my loved ones and ones I don’t even know. For Matthew, I want him to get a break.  Matthew works so hard with both our work with our work as well as teaching at 2 NYC Universities.  He’s such a hard worker and sometimes I know he just wants two hours to himself to paint some miniatures or play a game.   With the holiday season coming up, I’ll make sure he puts his feet up and relax!  For my Dad, I want good health.  He’s been sick a bit the last few years and I worry about him constantly. My dad is probably reading this right now and knows I nag him all the time about how he’s doing, but I just want to be sure he’s healthy because he means the wold to me.  And for every pet in the world?  I want to give it food, water and a comfortable home.  And plenty of kisses. Ok, lots of kisses. Especially those furry cats. Goodness gracious,  do I want to kiss those cats.  I think of how fortunate our cats are and then I see some kitties on the street and it breaks my heart.  I want to bring every single cat home with me but Matthew says I’m not allowed to.. can you imagine that?
