Can I tell you how annoying it’s been trying to work find clothes for working on the land that actually fits me? We went to a outfitter store a few weeks ago to buy work clothes and the store should have been called “Made for Men” Matthew had no problem finding overalls, jacket, boots and everything else. Their women’s section had dresses, scarves, exercise pants and cashmere sweaters. Ok, that’s real fair.
They had no women’s overalls.
They had 2 jackets.
They had 3 pairs of women’s boots while Matthew had 2 walls filled.
I had to try on men’s jackets and overalls which weighed 10 pounds. How was I going to swing my ax with this extra weight? Ok maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Maybe there will be no ax swinging in the near future, but how was I suppose to move with this extra 20 pounds on me?
So I became frustrated and didn’t buy anything.
I threw Matthew’s overalls on at home, sauntering around like weighed down zombie, mumbling how nice he had it in life.
I have no shame in saying this. Not only do I want work clothes that fit me, I want them to be pretty too. Yeah, take that. Give me purple. Give me blue. Give me pink. Let me match my nails to my overalls. It’s like they’re saying that if you want to work hard then you need to dress like a man. Whatever. I have an ax.
When I was seeing darkness finally there was light! There she was, my Carhartt Full Swing Sandstone Winn Jacket! It was nice looking. It was light. It actually fit my body correctly. It wasn’t going to make me sink to the bottom if I fell into a pond. I was in love.
In the What I LOVE series, I’m sharing current things that I love. Maybe it’s cats, maybe it’s a new restaurant, maybe it’s a new cookie, maybe it’s… anything!
So it’s finally the rush to the Holidays. Have you begun shopping yet? I haven’t, but I will begin soon. I’m not a Black Friday shopper because usually I’m too impatient and too picky. What I love is finding that special gift for a friend or loved one that fits them perfectly. You know that friend who is obsessed with donuts (that’s me!) then why not get her a donut clutch handbag so she can never be too far from her beloved sweets?
When I was flipping through the pages of Marie Claire I started to get some ideas for my fashion forward and sweet tooth friends. I love browsing magazines for ideas but I usually don’t love those price tags that come with it. You know it’s not going to be good when the price says “Price upon request”. So below are some of my favorite trends without those giant price tags.
Reach for the stars with these cutting-edge items with a futuristic bent.
I am so in love with that dress along with the clear bag that I’m seeing hearts in my own eyes. Maybe Matthew is reading this…. Hello lovely! Oh and that Robot bag, I can’t stand how cute it is.
I have been waiting to make a trip post for weeks but I was unsure how to do it, so I’ve decided to break it up into sections. The first part – food and animal friends!
In March, Matthew and I were traveled on a journey across the world to Doha, Qatar. While there we would be teaching a GIF, VIDEO, ANIMATION, EVERYTHING COOL workshop to students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. The trip was amazing and so much more. We were in Doha for almost 2 weeks so got to see alot which means I have a ton of pictures to share. Instead of making one looooooong post, I’m going to break it up into sections which will be more concentrated.
The flight to Doha was about 13 hours and thankfully nonstop. We flew with Qatar Airways which had a night flight which worked nice to sleep on. On the flight there and back our row of 3 only had 2 (us!) so I was able to take up to 2 seats, eat some decent airplane food and catch up on nearly the entire season of Downton Abbey.
It’s 2015 you guys and we’re ready to start the year, but we need to look fashionable while doing it, right? Of course!
No matter if you’re running errands in the city, going on a date night or planting seeds in the garden, I always feel that fashion adds confidence, so I love playing around with it. Below are some of my favorite Winter 2015 fashion pieces, perfect for staying warm!
Probably the most important piece for your Winter closet is a good Winter Coat. First, the coat needs to be warm and protect you from the elements. Second, the coat needs to be warm… oh did I mention that already? It’s important for NYC Winters! Third, it needs to look good! Coats come in all lengths, all materials and all colors so I wanted to give a good variety.
The Sporty Everyday Look The North Face perfects the combination of comfort, warmth and style. I wear my North Face for everyday wear to work, to the grocery store, to the garden and almost everything in between. I love my Thermoball Parka because it’s the perfect length. Short coats don’t keep me warm enough in the Winter, so the extra coverage is important. Besides that, it has a hood (must have) and comes in my favorite Winter color – black. Is it warm? You betcha! Thermoball synthetic insulation has the warmth equivalent of 600-fill down. It’s incredibly lightweight but yet retains the heat, meaning it’s my favorite coat in the Winter! And for social media lovers, it has a internal media pocket, perfect for slipping your phone in.

It’s Spring, right? I mean technically it is and we’ve had a few days where it feels like it. Ok, I mean today is a day where it doesn’t feel like it, but soon it will really be Spring. You believe me right? Ignore the snow in your yard if it’s there, let’s not think of that!
To get in the Spring mood, I wanted to share some of my favorite accessories for Spring.
Here are my 3 favorite accessory categories for the season:
Umbrellas – April showers bring May flowers, so let’s get ready for a rainy month.
Sunglasses – I’m obsessed with sunnies!
Bookbags- Let’s get out of the house and go on some trips!
First, let’s talk umbrellas!
You’ll see many umbrellas on the sidewalks when it’s raining but usually it’s a crown of dark colors. Why not stand out from the crowd and make your day brighter by making your umbrella a pastel color or fun design? I really love transparent ones too, great for not walking into people on the sidewalk! 😉
I found the items on Fab.com which if you don’t know about is awesome for shopping! I still swoon at the rainbow leather rug I got there last year, but that’s another story!
I have a cat umbrella that always cheers me up!
Wouldn’t this heart umbrella just steal your heart during a rainstorm?
Next up, sunglasses! I’m obsessed with them! I like them colorful, I like them big, I like them with designs, I love them all!
Want to know a quick story? I went to Disney World a few years ago (best place on Earth) and fell in love with sunglasses I bought there. They were cheap plastic but there was just something about them that sung to my heart. Imagine the tears when my sunglasses broke one day! So I set off on trying to find them online but came up empty! Then my friend Erin told me she was headed to Disney World and would find them for me again, and she did! I was one happy girl when I was able to wear my Mickey glasses again!
Aren’t the flowers on this pair beautiful? Pastel floral sunglasses? Yes, please!
And last but not least, the item I love most of all, a bookbag! I don’t use purses often, I’m more of a bookbag kind of girl. It has lots of benefits including more storage (I always carry my laptop and more in this), I can lug groceries inside of it on my back and I’m less likely to leave it places. It has become a permanent fixture with me when I leave the house. I use a soft white Baggu bag which has held up over the years, and I made minor adjustments by adding some neon to the string and adding my pom pom balls which people just love to talk about!
Here’s some bags for Spring, ranging from luxurious to something you’d take on a picnic hike. I really love the floral print one too, I think I need to add it my Spring wardrobe! The red bag in the bottom left is from Baggu. I have a bunch of Baggu grocery bags that I use every single day as well, they hold up great!
Tell me, what’s your must have Spring accessory item?
Do you love pastels and colors or prefer classic black and white?
I’m going to jump on this band wagon because who doesn’t want to see cat printed clothes? I mean, really?
So many of my favorite girl bloggers show their monthly Stitch Fix options, but I don’t do Stitch Fix because I’ve never seen anything dinosaur or cat printed that they send out. Tragic. So in this new feature, I will be posting what I wore in the last week. I’m going to try to do this every 2-3 weeks or so, hope you like it!
Sunday was like a Spring day, it was beautiful and full of sunshine. I had short sleeves and just a light Spring jacket on! I loved it!
I had a afternoon lunch date.
Detail Shots. I’m big on cute socks under skirts. When you walk, you can catch a glimpse of them. Also I’m obsessed with Peter Pan Collars.
Here’s my winter coat with the look. It turned from a previous Spring day to extremely cold!
During the day, a bit sleepy. And then I wanted something to quickly transition into “Night” as we saw Rocky on Broadway in the evening! It was amazing.
I have black shorts on, you just can’t really tell.
A closeup on this beauty because it’s unreal. A friend found for this me in Chicago (I believe). It’s one of my favorite cat attire treasures. Look at the buttons! It also has some sparkles on it!
Thursday. We went to Medieval Times (I’m doing a whole post on that because it was so much fun) so I thought galactic tights would be the way to go? I’m also obsessed with all space printed clothing. This is one of my favorite shirts as I love the cut. I got it from a girl on Etsy who sadly closed her shop. 🙁
Since it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow and I know you’ll be kissing all day long, I wanted to brighten up those lips with some color!
My name is Pamela, I’m 30 years old and I just started to wear lipstick.
Insert Nervousness here.
To followup on my post earlier this week talking about the new Fashion/Beauty/Art section at BFG, I wanted the first review post to be about something that I’m currently learning all about: lipstick! Why does it all have to be so complicated? Sure, it’s easy as in you put it on your lips. But what about color? What about lasting all day long? What about accidentally smearing it and looking like a clown as noone tells you out of pity? Girl problems.
I decided a few months ago I wanted to start wearing lipstick. I sent texts out to my friend declaring “I’m wearing lipstick!” to their confusion (note I did not insert the kissy lips emoticon – I can not bring myself to do that, yet). I marched out of the bathroom after applying my new lip color, walked straight up to Matthew where he exclaimed “Woah”. “Woah?”. Is there a worst response? What does “Woah” mean? Is that good? Is that bad? Is that surprise? Goodness, cut me some slack. Give me something else to work with. So after I made him give me 10 other descriptive words for each color, and asked him a million times if it looked bad, then I took a deep breath and stepped out of the house with color on my lips. Was the world ready for this?
Here’s the thing about lip color. You’re the only one who really knows it. Sure, you can tell when someone else is wearing it (sometimes) but you’re the only one judging yourself. It turns out wearing bright pink lips doesn’t make everyone on the sidewalk stop and stare in horror, they just keep walking by thinking in their head “Now that’s some great color” (or that’s what I tell myself). If you can live confidently while wearing lipstick, everyone is going to think you wear it well and wear it every single day. When I first wore my dark red lips outside of the house I was pretty sure people were going to throw things (and words) at me while walking down the street, but noone did. It’s up to you to rule that color.
I heard great things about Revlon’s Colorburst Lipsticks in both the Matte Balm and Balm Stains so I bought 3 to try out in hopes this wouldn’t be a total disaster.
Each of the Lipsticks were approximately $9 at my local drugstore but online it says you can get them cheaper at Target so try there. Also I got 2 Matte Balms as they were buy one, get one 50% off so I lived crazily and bought two – which I’m really glad I did.
I made a video that reviews each, talks about lipstick worries, kissing boys (and cats) and just has a lot of me rambling on. Grab a cup of tea and watch:
A quick run down on each:
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm Comes in 10 shades
Definitely Matte finish
Made of a Triple Butter Complex of Shea, Coconut and Mango so it does treat your lips as well as colors them.
Does last a long time, but it’s not perfect and will come off some on mugs and kissing partners.
Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain: Comes in 10 shades
Goes on lighter than what the color appears
Feels like a colored lip balm, very light weight.
Does last a long time. Because they are more balmy, it tends to not leave too much of a color trace on mugs.
Verdict: Try them! Buy them! I’m a lover of these lipsticks. They are great for experienced lipstick wearers or newbies like me. I would try to buy a few colors, something light and something dark, to be able to try both ends of the spectrum.
Trying them out:
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Elusive.
This is very Spring pink, think lots of flowers and tea parties in the garden. It’s a really fresh fun bright color.
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Standout.
This is the vixen color, it makes me feel like a sexy librarian (check out my Brooklyn Public Library card). It’s a very rich red and feels like velvet.
Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain in Honey.
This is just a slight touch of pink, it looks and feels like a natural shade of light pink lip balm. I tend to wear this every day. * FAVORITE*
Tell me– have you tried these lipsticks yet? Do you wear lipstick? Is there any color that you want to try now?
I’m pretty excited to tell you in the next few weeks I hope to expand the new category of Art & Fashion of Brooklyn Farm Girl. These two worlds are a big part of my life as it’s my job but I think I do a lackluster job at posting about it! These are things I hope to post more about:
Fashion – I like wacky, colorful clothes and I love wearing sneakers. Sometimes I just want to babble on about that pastel dress I saw and can’t stop thinking about.
Beauty – I’m 30 and I just started wearing lipstick. That’s a big step! More makeup, beauty reviews and advise on how to make your hair rainbow bright if you’re feeling up for it!
Art – I went to the recent Mike Kelly show at PS1 and because it made me smile, I need to share it with you. I’d like to feature gallery shows, films, books and plenty of cool things happening around the web.
Personal Art – I really want to tell you more about what Matthew and I do for a living, especially because some of you have asked me! I document everything, from beginning to start so I think it would be a great spot to show you how we product projects from inspiration, to working with our team and picking out clothes/models, to behind the scenes on set to the long part: post production. I’d love to show you how we do it all, with screen shots along the way. I’m pretty excited for these posts.
To kick it off, I wanted to review the new book “The World of Urban Decay” by Photographer Martin ten Bouwhuijs published by Schiffer Publishing.
After receiving this book I already bookmarked (as in real life bookmarks, weird, I know) a few pages for inspirations for our own projects. If you’re into texture art, this book is going to be a dream for you and inspire you so much.
Living in NYC lots of people except the city to be new and pretty, but honestly New York is pretty old and at times not so pretty. I don’t mean that in a bad way, I mean that in a great way because I personally appreciate those walls that have paint chipping off, the buildings that haven’t been touched in decades and the factories that people just got up and seemed to disappear. All that and more is shown in this book. I think lots of people will appreciate this book. Those of you who love archicture will enjoy this book. Those of you who love seeing the beauty in the ugly will enjoy this book. Those of you who have snuck into a building or through a hole in a fence to take photographs to be kicked out by police (wave your hand proudly if this is you!) will really love and respect the photographer for these images.
Throughout this book you will see the photographer’s regular urban exploration missions throughout Western Europe thhat have culminated in this collection of haunting images made in abandoned hospitals, morgues, monasteries, power plants, schools, factories, swimming pools, and castles. Each location is described in a brief history, so you’ll learn how the building was used and more quick details.
Do you love these pictures and locations as much as I do? I especially love the last one. We have a upcoming film coming up we’re directing and I’m totally dreaming of that location for a specific scene. It’s just beautiful to me.
Hope you liked this review and enjoyed the beautiful world of urban decay!
You can find more details about this book at Amazon if you’re interested in picking up a copy. Credit goes to Schiffer Publishing to allow me to post these pictures and review.
With all the sexy chocolate talk a few days ago I decided I wanted to share something different today! Even though it’s alot of gardening and cooking on this blog, I’d like to slowly start to dip my toes into making some fashion and design posts so I thought this would be a great start.
To start, Matthew and I often work in fashion so even though you see me in some pajama wearing dressed garden pictures I love clothes and sparkly nails. Matthew actually makes fun out of me because I often dress in inappropriate gardening clothes, who knew Yohji Yamamoto could make dresses for girls to pick their cauliflower in? Patent leather shoes in the garden? Why not.
I have been wanting a hair change for a while now. I had blue hair for so many years but then I decided it was time to let go so I went back to my natural dark brown. And then months later I immediately regretted it and dreamed of having blue back. I went back and forth between doing it and not doing it and then finally I decided on a happy medium – gray. I’m going gray already, so why not just start out early and go full gray? So earlier this week I went see the ultra talented Aura at Sally Hershberger salon and went silver. It’s a bit darker than what I was hoping for, and I have fears of green and yellow tints (hopefully will be solved with some shimmer I add in when washing) but a few days later I’m feeling pretty good about it. It especially shines gray in the natural light. Snowmen love it too. 🙂
Right now I’m kinda crazy about bonnets. I have a friend who constantly thinks I’m crazy for this, but I’m in love. On my Christmas list I have “bonnets” listed. I can’t get enough. A sharp black bonnet for the winter time makes me weak in the knees.
Also I’m all about layers year round, but especially in the winter time. This is my winter coat I often wear, but I love wearing multiple skirt layers underneath to peek out from the front.
Along with long flowing skirts, I love casual Oxfords or sneakers to be worn with it.
Knitted wear for cat lovers. Multiple people passed this link on to me, glad I’m thought of when it comes to cats.. 🙂
Have you seen the Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop collection? I want everything, but especially these 2 dresses and the monster throw.
I’ve been dreaming of neon and pastel colored satchels.
I love the hair for the Valentino Spring 2014 show. I have tried to do this to my own hair a few times now.
I love these nails for the upcoming holidays.
Have you tried Beauty Box Five yet? They are a subscription service that delivers a box of sample beauty products every single month. They kindly asked me if I wanted to sample them so they sent me a monthly box. Here are my thoughts:
My products were travel size shampoo/conditioner, eyeliner, lip gloss and oil absorbing facial tissues
The box is $12 which is a good deal. The eyeliner and lip gloss retail for $30 together so already you are saving.
The eyeliner comes with a lid that has a built in sharpener – genius idea in my opinion.
The lip gloss is ok but I don’t think I would wear it. Honestly I can’t bring myself to wear anything that says “be a…bombshell”.
I wasn’t a fan of the shampoo or conditioner, I went back to my regular bottles the next night. Also the full sizes bottles retail for about $20 a piece so a bit pricey if you end up buying it. I didn’t like the shampoo and conditioner were 2 out of the 5 products.
The oil absorbing tissues are nice to have, but I have a few already and this pack isn’t anything special.
I was a bit bummed to not find any nail products in this box, especially as nail color is so popular right now.
If you’re into beauty and love trying new products, I think you should give it a try. If you’re incredibly picky, it might not be for you.
My fragrance of choice for the past few years has been Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. I have been stopped and asked so many times what I’m wearing. I like perfumes that are less floral and more strong. Black Orchid is described as “sultry woods” and has in it Bergamot, Citrus, Mandarin, Black Gardenia, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Lotus Wood, Orchid, Spicy Floral Accord, Orchid (Tom Ford Black Accord), Patchouli, Sandalwood, Incense, Vanilla. If this ever gets discontinued I will cry.
Do you use dry shampoo? Isn’t it just the best? Dry shampoo is great on those extra lazy days of “I don’t want to wash my hair but I don’t want to look like a greaser”. I have very fine hair so my hair tends to get oily quick but washing it every single day is bad, especially if it’s colored. With dry shampoo I can throw this on everyday instead. With my silver hair, it’s preferred I only wash it with real shampoo 2 times a week to make the color last as long as possible, so the dry shampoo works wonders to last the week. I’ve tried many dry shampoos that are out there, ranging from very expensive to cheap and I find that Suave’s Keratin Infusion works just as good as the extra pricey versions. Even better, you can find it at almost any drugstore now.
Another great hair product that works really well for dry or damaged hair caused by dying, bleaching or the elements is Living Proof Restore Mask. It increases hair’s resistance to breakage up to nine times while healing, protecting, and preventing further damage. It’s a bit pricey but because you are only going to use it 1-2 times a week, a bottle lasts a long time. I was told by my stylist to mix a drop of this with my conditioner every time, especially because my hair has been bleached and dyed so many times it can use some healing.
So tell me what are your favorite beauty products right now? What clothing or accessories are you dreaming about? What is your favorite mascara for long lashes? Please give me recommendations, I’m looking for a new mascara!
