Butcher Box Review

Posted:7/25/19
Updated:2/4/21

Full review of Butcher Box from a family who eats on a budget.  Includes unboxing video of Beef & Chicken box.

Our family has started using Butcher Box and we really like the convenience and cost of the service.  As a food lover on a budget, I’m always looking for ways to help our grocery bill, while providing quality food.  Here’s my full review of Butcher Box.

ORDER NOW and get 2 pounds of burgers for FREE!

What is Butcher Box?

Butcher Box is a meat subscription service that delivers meat to your doorstep.  The box gets delivered monthly or bimonthly, depending on your preference.   Butcher Box provides high quality meat, at a fraction of the cost that you pay in the grocery store.

Unboxing Butcher Box

If you want to save yourself some time reading this post, check out my unboxing video below.

Why I Like Butcher Box

The 3 reasons why I like Butcher Box are easy to explain.

  1. Cost. For the quality of meat (more about that below) the price can’t be beat.  I’ve done comparisons at local grocery stores and my favorite online grocers and for this quality of meat the price with Butcher Box is always less expensive.
  2. It’s easy.  The box gets delivered to your doorstep.  I live in NYC where I have to lug groceries home by hand or in a stroller.  It’s not fun.  I like that this box gets delivered and my meat grocery shopping is finished.
  3. They care about small farms and the animals.  This is probably most important to me.

I find that when I stop by the grocery store for 1 thing, I usually end up with 5 things.  So if I have to stop by for ground beef for dinner that night, I might end up with 4 more items.  This adds up.  By taking less trips to the grocery store, not only am I saving time, but I’m also saving money.

Quality of Butcher Box Meat

If you’re concerned about quality of meat in Butcher Box I can tell you that it’s as close to restaurant style beef and chicken that I’ve found.

They provide premium meat with the following commitment:

  • 100% grass-fed & grass-finished beef – They are free to range on grassy pastures, graze year-round, packed with nutrients like Omega 3s and vitamins.
  • Free-range organic chicken – They roost in barns, have outdoor access and have a all-vegetarian diet.
  • Heritage breed pork  – They breed in open barns, have outdoor access and have a all vegetarian diet.
  • Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon – Hand-harvested by independent family fishing, no commercial fishing farms, strict rules set about quantity by Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
  • All certified humane
  • All free from added antibiotics and hormones

Step 3 Chicken Breast

What comes in a Beef and Chicken Butcher Box?

Here’s what comes in this specific box.  This is usually the one we get.

  • 2 lbs of ground beef
  • 2 NY strip steaks
  • 4 top sirloin steaks
  • 3 pounds of boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 3 pounds of chicken drumsticks

Sometimes you’ll get a alternative depending on availability. For example, I did NOT get NY strip steaks in my box, but I DID get chicken thighs instead.   I’m 100% ok with this change (I actually prefer it) so it worked well for us.

How much does Butcher Box cost?

Butcher Box has a few different box options.  Here’s the pricing:

Custom Box (you choose what you want): $149
Mixed Box (Beef, Chicken, Pork) – $129
Beef & Chicken – $129
Beef & Pork – $129
All Beef – $129

All prices including shipping.

These prices are for their 24 meal boxes (more about that below).  You can also get their bigger box if you have a larger family.  Larger boxes cost between $238-$270 and includes 48 meals.

How much does Butcher Box cost per meal?

The Beef & Chicken box provides 24 meals, so it costs $5.38 per meal.
If you were to get the 48 meal box, the cost gets even cheaper at $4.96 per meal.

The way that I broke it down for us is:

  • 2 lbs of ground beef – 4 meals
  • 2 NY strip steaks – 4 meals
  • 3 pounds of boneless skinless chicken breast – 6 meals
  • 5 pounds of chicken drumsticks – 4 meals
  • 3 pounds of chicken thighs – 6 meals

What are Butcher Box add ons?

After you select your box, you will get the option to add on some….. well, add ons!

For example right now some of the add on options are:

Apple Smoked Bacon: $7
Ground Beef Brick (2 pounds): $15
Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon (2 pounds): $25
Breakfast Sausage: $9
Whole Pork Tenderloin: $9
Boneless Pork Chops: $14

I added on the breakfast sausage and bacon for our Saturday morning breakfast meals.

Don’t forget to look for their ongoing offers!

Who else loves free stuff? You do too, right?  Butcher Box almost always has promo offers for free items to be added to your cart, so make sure to check them out on the website when ordering.

For example, if you look in the above photo you’ll see some hamburger patties.  These were FREE!  Right now there’s a promo for some yummy bacon.

How’s the packaging for Butcher Box?

I’m glad you asked because sometimes subscription services drive me crazy with all their wasted plastic and material.  I’m glad to tell you that Butcher Box uses 100% recyclable paper insulated box made from paper fibers.

The inbuilt recyclable insulation is designed to protect your meat, with a separate compartment for dry ice. I have gotten these boxes delivered in the middle of heat waves in NYC and never had a issue.  Their paper insulated boxes work wonderfully at keeping your meat safe.Full review of Butcher Box from a family who eats on a budget.  Includes unboxing video of Beef & Chicken box.

Should I try Butcher Box?

Yes, I think you should.  If you’re looking for quality meat at good prices, this is the service for you.

If it’s not for you, you can cancel your subscription at any time prior to your invoice date, with no cancellation fee.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Butcher Box!  If you give it a try, I’d love to hear what you think!

I love this idea! This sounds really convenient because many times I have all the other ingredients for a dish except for the meat. Were there a lot of ice packs in them? I’m always curious because I live in the AZ heat 🙂

Hey Dee, they figure out dry ice amount based on location. Mine came completely cold and we’ve been loving this! Here’s their answer from their website: “We ship your box with a specific amount of dry ice that is calculated based on your location. As the dry ice evaporates, it mixes with the air inside the box which continues to keep the meat cold.”

I watched your video and loved it. I doubt very much that where I am in rural Newfoundland, Canada that I would be able to get something like this but I am going to look into it. The nearest city is approx an hour away and I am thinking if they had a a similar thing going I would definitely pick it up if need be because I know there would be no delivery. This service is so handy for city dwellers, I know because I used to be faced with lugging home groceries in the 30 some years of living in city. Lots of times I would be taking bus, walking or on back of motorcycle trying to manage bulky bags of groceries. I wish we would have had this back then, where I used to live. Pamela- I was also wondering , will you be ever organizing another tea swap? No pressure, I just loved the last time and I am sure you have plenty to do , but maybe think about it for next winter, spring, or whenever.

Hey Carol, I wish this was available in your area too! It definitely is convenient for everyone! I don’t look forward to lugging home a weeks worth of groceries, especially in the Summer months!

Thanks for mentioning the tea swap, I can arrange one for the Winter – maybe in November?
